Cowboys Appear Close To Re-Signing Crayton

What a week this could be for the Cowboys' wide receivers.

Terrell Owens is out with a high ankle sprain that has the team crossing its fingers concerning his availability for the playoffs.

Terry Glenn is expected to play for the first time all season this Sunday in Washington.

And now it appears wide receiver Patrick Crayton is getting close to a contract extension.

The fourth-year pro, who is expected to become an unrestricted free agent in the off-season, said on Thursday he is hopeful to get a deal done in the near future, possibly as early as this week.

“Hopefully pretty soon,” Crayton said. “This is exactly where I want to be.”

Crayton also responded to recent reports he might be interested in re-joining Bill Parcells, the new vice president of football operations for the Miami Dolphins.

Crayton denied any interest in leaving the Cowboys on Thursday, stating his focus is getting a deal done and staying in Dallas. Crayton was a high school standout at nearby DeSoto, just south of Dallas.

Crayton was a restricted free agent last season before signing the Cowboys’ one-year tender offer of $1.3 million.

With Glenn injured this season, Crayton has thrived in the No. 2 spot, setting career-highs with 48 catches for 689 yards and seven touchdowns.

Crayton is expected to start this Sunday against Washington, probably alongside Sam Hurd. But Glenn and Miles Austin, and maybe even rookie Isaiah Stanback could get some added playing reps this week with Owens out. The Cowboys are hopeful Owens will be ready for the divisional round (Jan. 12-13).

Well it would be nice to lock up Crayton long-term but I still think he is NOT #1 or even #2 WR material! He couldn't even beat a linebacker in single coverage last week against Carolina. But with Owens & Glenn both getting up there in years & Glenn maybe not even returning next season at all, we had to do something!

I hope they aren't signing him to a big contract.   I am not convinced the Crayton can be much of a threat with out Witten and Owens in the line up.

I think the only negative is that I wanted to see more playing time for our young WR's next yr

Crayton is a solid #2,3 WR...good for Jerrah for locking him up.  He has already proved he can step up this year.

Y'up not a bad thing if Jerry doesn't spend too much money on him. It will be good to keep him for Team Chemistry, but if he starts asking for top dollar - I would consider different options

Now that T.O. and Randy Moss have calmed down the BS talking, and Keyshawn Johnson is out of the league (until Bill Parcells lures him to Miami).. SOMEONE has to carry the BS crap talking torch!!!  LOL   Don't get me wrong, i like Crayton.. i think he has stepped up and done a FINE job this year.. he is a decent number 2 WR to go right along the WR we draft in the 1st round this year.. then we have 2 WRs that'll be here for a whie and can grow together!!

crayton has proven himself a very good #3 reciever, but i believe that is as good as it gets for him...hurd or austin seem to have a better upside to them because of their natural foot speed they bring to the table. crayton is worth resigning as long as the price doesn't get much higher than he is already making. he could continue to school the younger recievers for another season or two.

All for Crayton, he deserves it he has done a great job and won a couple of key games for us.

Glad we are keeping him he will be a good one in a couple of more years.

I heard, this same stuff about Smith who is now great WR for Carolina.

Starbuck.........good Alvin Harper comparison.  Crayton is a good complement as long as we always have a decent #1 guy.

Crayton is as good as he thinks and we need to stop with the " BS comments".

He's a great possession receiver, tough, and knows where the open areas are, plus he is fiercely competitive, fearless, a money time player, and great team mate. Patrick is a credit to the Cowboys.  He has made it from sixth round nobody to a player we'd cry about if he wasn't on our team.  Pay him,  but leave some for MB, Flozell, Hamlin, Newman, Canty, and Reeves.

You know Crayton has done a good job this year in replacement of Glenn. We need to go ahead and lock him in. He is a good insurance policy for Owens and Glenn. Glenn may not even play next year with that knee of his. he is young and can contribute for a long time.

It's all about cost. If we can get him cheap enough he is also good trade bait in the future when we have a good idea of the quality of the kids coming up. Someone will always need a guy like that in the future with injuries happening week to week; as long as his contract is not too high. Jerry is smart; he won't over pay him.

As long as we don't pay too much for him O.K.. He is a legit #3 only. I'm worried about where his mouth will take him once he secures some gauranteed money. If T.O. said half as much Crayton has said this year he'd be all over the news. I also believe we need to sign more important free agents than Crayton.

I hope this doesn't mean we don't draft James Hardy.

James Hardy will be a future hall-of-famer.  Mark that down.

As for Crayton, he is a tremendous #3 receiver, a pretty good #2 receiver, but he is NOT a #1 receiver and I'm sure the staff knows that.

I hope this contract isn't too big because I'm very high on Stanback, pretty high on Austin and I WANT JAMES HARDY IN THE 1ST ROUND!!!

Well, I personally think from what I have seen, he is pretty good. Not a receiver your going to build your game plan around on defense but he has good hands and a nice burst of speed in open spots. I also think Tony feels really comfortable throwing to him. I would not give him the big bucks but he is certainly worth some money. I would save that for maybe another vet that would make a great addition to this team. I think Roy Williams (though injured right now and still under contract) from Detroit would be a good addition. He has never really had the QB with the skills able to utilize his play making ability and might fall through the cracks (what he could have been) if he stays in Detroit.
