StarA few of you have been asking what’s happened with unrestricted free agents Al Singleton and Tony Parrish. Well, they still are unrestricted free agents and apparently the Cowboys have no interest at this time of re-signing them. Since they still were unrestricted free agents as of June 1, the Cowboys then had the right to tender them a one-year veteran minimum deal to secure exclusive negotiating rights to them. The Cowboys passed, as did San Diego on former Cowboys linebacker Randall Godfrey, who has put 11 years in the NFL. See with guys like that at this time of year, teams want to better judge if they have young guys who can handle available backup roles, knowing if they sign a veteran like that now, they become progress stoppers.

StarThe Cowboys have scheduled practices with the Denver Broncos on Aug. 15 and 16 leading into the teams’ preseason game Aug. 18 at Texas Stadium. If those practice sessions are out here at The Ranch, they will not be open to the public. While the Cowboys are breaking training camp on Aug. 8 after just two weeks of workouts in San Antonio, they are expected to continue their training camp routine back at The Ranch for the following two weeks.

StarYou know this Adam Bergen guy the Cowboys just signed, a two-year tight end who played with Arizona, did catch 43 passes for 381 yards and two touchdowns for the Cards. Evidently, though, the new coaching staff was a tad iffy on his blocking skills. He likely will get a good look during the OTA’s and weekend mini-camp since Anthony Fasano (shoulder) is not expected to participate.

StarCowboys Pro Bowl left tackle Flozell Adams had successful arthroscopic surgery on his right knee to clean up some debris that had been causing swelling in the knee. Adams was not seen participating in either of the two organized team activity workouts we were able to watch over the past two weeks because of the swelling in the same knee he suffered the torn ACL during the 2005 season. Such a cleanup surgery is not abnormal for a player coming off a reconstructive surgery. Adams is fully expected to be ready for the start of training camp.

StarThe Cowboys worked out two tight ends on Monday, their former practice squader Landon Trusty and two-year veteran Adam Bergen. The Cowboys apparently will sign Bergen, who spent the past two seasons with Arizona playing in 30 games, starting nine as a rookie free agent in 2005. Bergen missed the final two games of the 2006 season with a sprained knee and finished the season on injured reserve.

StarAnother three-day OTA session begins Tuesday at The Ranch, followed by the weekend’s three day mini-camp, so I’m guessing we’ll have another round of screeching about the guys who are missing from these OTA’s. I find it funny how writers seem to pick and choose who they bust for missing these voluntary workouts. I’m guessing tight end Anthony Fasano, now sitting with a sprained A.C. joint in his shoulder, is wishing he had missed the non-pad practice when someone fell on his shoulder. Must be slow time of year, because also see where Antonio Winfield doesn’t plan to attend any Minnesota OTA’s and is working out on his own, and now that Cincinnati’s Deltha O’Neal doesn’t believe in OTA’s either.

StarGot to thank Gary Henley of Warrenton, Ore., for this one, sending in that former Cowboys kicker Jose Cortez, currently working as a $14-an-hour dockworker, will soon be an Oregon State Trooper. Yep, the former Oregon State kicker, who spent part of that 2005 season with the Cowboys thanks to Billy Cundiff tearing a quad the final day of training camp, will report to pre-academy training on July 30. Boy, Cortez, who tried his foot for a slew of NFL teams as well as kicking for L.A. in the XFL, sure has come a long ways since sneaking into the country though Tijuana, Mexico, at age 15 from El Salvador.
