Mick Shots - Sept. 27

StarHow much fun is Terrell Owens having so far this year? Night and day from last season. “But I do feel like a Cowboy,” Owens said. “At this point in time, I definitely would like to retire here and go into the Hall of Fame as a Cowboy. It’s a lot of fun right now. It’s nothing that I didn’t envision as far as the success we’ve had so far. Throughout training camp, we knew we had something special.” As he says, what a difference year makes, because last year at this time “fun” and “Owens” were anonyms.

StarDon’t expect the Cowboys to get a lot of pressure on Rams quarterback Marc Bulger even though he could be without three-fifths of his offensive line. The Rams chose last week to protect him and his two broken ribs with a lot of short drops and getting the ball out quickly. Can’t imagine that will change much this week, even if they continue to administer pain-killing injections to his ribcage area. This will put a lot of pressure on the Cowboys’ corners to tackle well and the defensive front to get the hands up. Deflections will be more likely than sacks.

StarEveryone keeps trying to compare Marion Barber and his running style to someone. Well, I always listened to La’Roi Glover when he was here, so no sense stopping now: “A smaller Jerome Bettis.”

StarAnd the score . . . now I’m wondering when the last time anyone thought the Cowboys were 13-point favorites? But as beat up as the Rams are, and as seemingly mature as these Cowboys seem to be, that might not be that far fetched. How about Cowboys 27, Rams 17.

I always liked La'Roi Glover and was sad to see him go. I especially liked his comments about working against Tony Romo on the practice squad. He spoke of Romo's intangibles even back then, and I see he's got an accurate read on Barber too.

Here are Gil Brandt's comments on this game:

"The Rams' defensive coaches seemingly need to pull a rabbit out of their hat with the 0-3 Rams facing the 3-0 Cowboys. Dallas leads the NFL in scoring and ranks second in total offense. That said, St. Louis is better on defense than most would think. They're pretty good against the pass, and they've allowed less than 300 per game of total offense -- the fewest yards allowed in the NFC, in fact.

I don't think you'll see the Rams blitz as much here -- most teams are becoming afraid to blitz Tony Romo. This could be a decent challenge for Dallas."

I don't think the Cowboys offense is going to have as much trouble with the Rams defense as the Rams offense is going to have with the Cowboys defense. T.O. is having too much fun, Jason Witten is too dangerous, and Sam Hurd is too much of a gamer for them to have too much difficulty against St. Louis, especially in the second half, after Garrett has made his adjustments. I do think this game will be a decent challenge for the Cowboys though, for the first half anyway. Look for Marion Barber to explode.

Marc Bulger can have all the short drops and quick releases he needs, but I don't think it's going to matter much. This Dallas defense has shown steady improvement each week, and I fully expect them to show continued improvement this week. Anthony Spencer is coming into his own, playing more instinctively instead of robotically, Bradie James and Akin Ayodele have been solid, and Demarcus Ware is due to have a breakout game. Jay Ratliff is becoming more accustomed to the nose, and at some point Chris Canty and Marcus Spears will get their act together. I think the Cowboys will get a few sacks.

Plus Jacques Reeves is more experienced, and Anthony Henry now leads the league in interceptions, not to mention Ken Hamlin has been stepping up his game. And eventually Roy Williams is certain to have an impact, shortly after he figures out how to tackle. I think the Cowboys will have a few interceptions.

Deflections may outnumber sacks, but sacks and interceptions combined will outnumber deflections. That's what I think.

And for the score, gee, I don't know--I haven't gotten the score right on any game so far, although I have accurately predicted a Cowboys victory--I'd say Dallas 38 St. Louis 10.

Dallas SHOULD win this game quite easily.  However, this game scares me.  More than the last one.  An 0-3 team in the NFL is like a time bomb. . .they will be fighting for their lives.  Everything going against them, everything going for us.  Its a trap game if ive ever seen it.  Please Cowboys, put on your hats and go to work.  This league is too tough to not show up. . .you will be beaten if you dont.  Though it should be a blowout (and i hope it is), i am going to caution and say that we barely win.  Hopefully, not barely lose.  This is a different team than we've had in the past, true. . .but ive seen this movie before.  Beware Dallas Cowboys. . . or better yet, be WARE.

The main reason Wade was brought here was to upgrade the play of the defense. Thus far, I'd say it looks a lot like the team we saw during the late season slide of 2006. The real surprise has been the play of the offense and, most notably, Tony Romo. Don't y'all yell at me for saying this, but he reminds me of Roger staubach in a lot of ways.

Anyhow, back to Wade. Wasn't this scheme supposed to help Canty and Spears become feared for their ability to use their athleticism? So far, NOT SO MUCH. I'm sorry, but Mr. Fix It needs to fix it, and now. No more wide open Bernard Berrians and Plaxico Burresses, please. Tighten up the stupid coverages and make sure opposing QB's can't step into their throws.

Out.

On his radio show, Isaac Bruce GAURANTEED a Rams win Sunday!  Now I gotta say, that's a pretty bold statement.  Even with the makings of a typical trap game, and forgetting that this is the Cowboys, who we know like to fall apart in these games, the fact still remains that a very good team is playing a very bad team that is decimated with injuries.  Then again, when we played Seattle in the playoffs they had a bunch of injuries. too.  Although you can say the reason we lost that game was becasue of our failure to attack their depleted secondary, which was mostly a coaching blunder - one that I don't see this coaching staff making.

In the past  I would have been inclined to agree, But THIS YEARS Cowboys have given me no reason as of yet to believe that they will self destruct.  I think Bruce knows that too and is simply trying to rally his troops,it won't work i see a serious blow out coming 34-3.

Our defense must continue to improve each week.  This is a trap game if I've ever seen one!  The most dangerous issue with playing any winless team is that team has absolutely nothing to lose and will pull out all stops to get a victory.  Plus the season is still early and the Rams figure a win here will help jump start their season and make them competitive again.

Defense does concern me but I like what Wade Phillips has done with our unit.  There are not many teams out there that will play well after losing their top two players on D, with one being a top 3 corner in the league.

As for T.O. retiring as a Cowboy, I'm all for it!  I've always loved the football player but hated the person.  Although this year, he's been a model citizen on the team.  I'm interested to see how he will handle adversity because at some point, all teams go through their share of adversity.  The league is too competitive not to.

Is it just me or does it seem that Greg Ellis realizes Spencer is playing well and figures his future as a Dallas Cowboy is in jeapordy.  Don't think for a minute Jerry Jones will not cut his losses if Spencer keeps playing well.

Did anyone notice the way we TOTALLY abandoned the running game last week during the 2nd half?  Then, after picking apart the Bears secondary, Marion Barber had all kinds of holes to run through?  I realize the Rams have a decent defense, however, the speed and talent of this Rams defense is no where near the level of Chicago’s, they just look better on paper because Dallas has yet to run all over them.

The game is at home, the Rams don't have Jackson (RB), Bulger has 2 broken ribs (soon to have many more), I mean look at the way Dallas was injuring the Bears defense, imagine what they can do to an already depleted offense.  It's going to be a good game (if you're a Dallas fan), I see Dallas owning time of possession nearly 3 to 1, surprisingly enough I don't think Dallas will run up the scoreboard quite the way they have been, I think this will be the game they dominate both sides of ball, i.e. controlling the tempo of the game, forcing St. Louis to play from behind, getting pressure on the quarterback forcing bad decisions, and employing a strong and imposing running attack, the Rams defensive weakness.  Don’t look for Dallas to be “trapped”.

Dallas - 31

St. Louis - 14

DallasDynasty7 said:

With the Rams injured offensive line and Bulger sporting two broken ribs still, even with Bruce and Holt, their offense will be under constant pressure and will be slowed to a near halt without Jackson, unless Leonard has a breakout game.  Their defense is a lot better than many people think, but then again, so were the bears till Dallas arrived.  We will essentially do the same thing to the Rams as we did to the Bears, a second half rally to a large victory afer a first half stalemate.  I predict in the end a Cowboys victory.

Cowboys - 37 (first half 13)

Rams - 17 (first half 10)

its great seeing T.O. playing like T.O. I thought he did great last year, considering the media circus at the beginning, the slow start, the finger/drops, etc. He had decent totals, but he just didnt seem like the T.O. of previous years. I figured it wud be better this year with him now being established, and having a low key camp. But I was worried when T.G. got hurt same as most people. With Garretts offense, and of course the great starts for the O line, Romo, Witten, T.O. just seems to be in the game so much more. Which of course makes him happy. Great start for the offense, and cant wait for T.G. to be part of it. Really hoping the D can come around. Sure hope Ellis can come back to at least close to his normal level this year. We need what he does REALLY bad. The fins and bears dont have much offense, but plaing on the road our D did pretty good. As for the Rams, its gonna be a lot easier of a game now, but it would have been a nice test to play the real Rams. It would be much more satisfying to win against their real team. But I love wins any way they come. Cant see Rams getting more than 13, and love us being a TD team rather than a FG team this year...Boys 31 Rams 13.

Be careful in looking too far ahead because every team is one major injury away from totally self destructing.  Hate to mention this but imagine if Romo goes down or even T.O. for that sake, the season would look totally different then now wouldn't it.  So let's please kill the playoff/superbowl talk and take it game by game.  Remember we haven't won anything in a long long time.

The Rams have a respectable pass defense, having given up only 438 total yards of pass offense through the first three weeks (granted it was against Carolina, San Francisco and Tampa Bay).  I would have liked to think that this was due in part to their opponents nursing large leads in the second half, but this was not the case at all.  San Francisco was trailing in the 4th and kicked a FG with 3 minutes left and Carolina and Tampa Bay had to score 13 and 14 points respectively in the 4th quarters of their games.  Also note that the Rams have no interceptions as yet this year, but they do have 5 forced fumbles.

With all of that said however, I would bet the farm that Rams pass defense will lose of few places from their lofty 3rd place ranking this week, but probably not by much.  I expect that the Cowboys will keep the ball on the ground this week for a number of reasons:

 1.  The Rams have given up more yards on the ground (457 yds.) than through the air (438 yds).

 2.  The Cowboys HUGE offensive line should physically dominate the Rams smaller defensive line.

 3.  As the game wears on, the Rams are going to wear out while the Cowboys should be protecting their comfortable lead and running out the clock.

I don't think the Rams are going to be able to score a TD against the Cowboys defense unless they do it on defense or special teams.

If we bring a pass rush and leave guys playing in the intermediate range defending, Bulger simply won't have time to make a good decision.  Eventually they will make throws downfield then the corners and safetys will need to be on their game against Holt and Bruce.  If there is a pass rush, that will take care of itself too.

The Rams are losing games because they simply can't hold defenses.  They are small and getting pushed off the line on both sides of the ball.
