Mick Shots - Nov. 22

StarSo the Cowboys must really like this single-high safety formation on one of their sub-package defenses to combat three-receiver sets when it’s like first or second down. Because when the Jets opened in three wides, instead of playing standard defense and forcing Roy Williams to get caught in single coverage wide, they came in with their two-inside-linebacker nickel, with Anthony Henry coming in for Akin Ayodele and Kevin Burnett coming in for Williams – better cover guys and still sound against the run. Which means Williams didn’t technically start a game for the first time in his six-year career.

StarSeemed pretty noticeable Patrick Crayton missed this game with a sprained ankle. His replacement, Sam Hurd, was held to just one reception, and it appeared, with Jets corner Darrelle Revis shadowing Owens, bumping him on the line of scrimmage with safety help over the top, Tony Romo wasn’t finding anything to the other side. Receivers not getting open had a lot to do with Romo getting sacked three times, which matched his season high.

StarAll right, the Cowboys and Packers held serve, both moving to 10-1, putting together the titanic match-up next Thursday at Texas Stadium. But guess what, the Packers have lost eight straight at Texas Stadium – regular season and playoffs. Why, the last time they beat the Cowboys at Texas Stadium was the final game of the 1989 season (1-15) when it was so cold here, the pipes in the bathrooms froze and first-year head coach Jimmy Johnson departed nearly immediately after the game to The Bahamas to escape the misery.

I love the Cowboys but I must say I was board during this game but happy we wow an easy match up. Romo was not sharp...I read that he injured his pinky on his throwing hand...That would explain the under thrown passes as well as why they keep the game so simple. The Packers Game would be a great game to watch IF I had the NFL Network, so sad I have Time Warner.

I liked the energy of Roy Williams later in the game where he normally is tired from getting burned on deep routes. Hamlin was great!

Don't know that Crayton's presence would've changed much, Mick. This wasn't the soft zone coverage of the Redskins. They manned-up on Owens and often doubled Witten. Hurd, I give you is not the player he will hopefully become but did shake coverage several times. He was rarely the primary receiver on plays and when open, Romo was already on-the-run looking for a check-down. Get running, TG. We need ya!

All in in all, the Cowboys did exactly what they needed to do.

Now, who's packin' cheese?

The cowboys defense looked alot better today! The offense was not as sharp with crayton but it that manage to score enough points! It sets up the best game of the year for the cowboys! Now the challenge is going to be, where am I going to watch the game? LOL!

Hey deleonm70, try www.channelsurfing.net. They run live feeds out of Canada where, amazingly, the entire country gets the NFL Network for free if memory serves. I used it to watch the Indy Atlanta game tonight. It lags slightly when the camera pans quickly, but its much better than I thought it would be. Seemed like a high-def feed. Perfect audio. No pixelation at all.

This makes perfect sense on why Romo under thew so many passes, and ones that could have been nice catches for TDs; Owens on the first INT and Witten on the close call that was too short. I'm hoping this week off will rest the pinky. Good game though, the D is getting much better but then again their offense was crap.

Next week; Green Bay at Dallas, I will be watching from the comfort of my home, I have DirecTV and they offer it of course. It's sad money hungry Time Warner is being shady like this, $2.99 sports pack addition to your cable, lame. Good luck peeps, all else fails, hit up a sports bar.

I Totally agree with this assessment, However I think that Hurd would have had a different game had there been any since of urgency at anytime during this game. OUR DEFENSE STEPPED UP.

Even against Jets there was not story: Cowboys death the match during the first quarter without giving any possibility to new York to sign just one touchdown.

Even more important they reach their best record in the Cowboys glorius history: 10-1. Cowboys answers also to Packers thanks to the dominium against Jets

Next week the “duel” between the two teams with a 10-1 record: at that time we will know who will be the NFC king: ROMO GO!!! COWBOYS GO!!!

Both the NFL and Time Warner suck.

Time Warner's argument of "our customers shouldn't have to pay for something they don't want to watch" is beyond insulting. Then why don't you credit me for the fifty channels I don't want to watch now but I still have to pay for!! You are the epitomy of hypocricy.

And the NFL is equally as greedy. If the NFL really wanted to get their product to the public they would compromise with the carriers.

yeah what a joke. i have direct tv so i'm not affected but that is BS. i switched to direct tv last year just because of that. and truthfully, the nfl package and the ability to get the nfl network is the only reason direct tv is even in business.

We still have a lot of work to do Cowboy fans. We need to address Nick Folk's kickoffs. Almost every kickoff is going to the opponent's 10-15, and a lot of times to the 20 yard line. That is not acceptable. I love Nick Folk however. He won me over with his performance in Buffalo. But the coaches need to address this problem. We need to see if our punter can now start kicking the kickoffs or something. Does anyone agree, because this has not been fully addressed and it is happening on almost every single kickoff. It puts our D in a tight position. Our coverage would probably be a lot better if the kickoffs went to at least the 5 yard line.

Romomanian said:

The short kicks were hanging kicks designed to allow the coverage team to get down on top of the Jets return man. The Cowboys compromised. Jets get pretty good starting position but no TD on the return. Probably won't see that against the Packers.

If the hang time didn't matter, Folk could kick line drives into the cheap seats.

Hi everyone! The pass coverage looked better because they weren't really tested, thanks to the constant pressure Clemens was during the whole game... great game by Ellis, Canty, Ware and really everyone on defense... these guys are only getting better as a group and they'll be chasing the old man, I agree to that too...

Hey VaqueroMex, I agree with you, but then this is one of those nights in which the plan should be to go out to a sportsbar to watch the game... and see the replays on nfl.com friday morning still hungover, lol...

I thought Sam Hurd was going to have a bigger role, TO was somewhat limited too, but there was some running game and the passing TD's were made at the right time, particularly the INT by TNew... and the second half was even better...

I agree with you ChrisTim about the kickoff issue, but just a reminder that you keep the topic or they'll kick you out...

And lastly, wow... 10-1 baby!!! I'm just very excited and I think we all Dallas Cowboys fans should feel very lucky that we've got ourselves the next Brett Favre in Tony Romo for the Cowboys. This guy is really fun to watch and gets me really excited. I'm sure Championships will come, as long as most of them remain healthy of course, but hopefully as early as this season we'll be probaly be hitting all the way to the NFC Conf. game at least... but even if not, this team is here to stay for quite awhile and again, it'll be fun to watch... and for Romo to beat the records of R Staubach and D White and T Aikman in only his first full season... this kid makes me feel great!!!

Regards everybody...

HOW 'BOUT THEM COWBOYS!!!!

I'm sorry man, but if that was the case, we would be getting some touchbacks, which are 100000000000 times better than every single return, no matter what team we face, taking them to the 30 or 35 to start their drive. You are wrong, ChrisTim is right. Touchbacks touchbacks touchbacks, no more crappy kickoffs. It is the second scariest part of our team!

Finally, They are using Roy correctly, let him get rest on passing downs and after the opossing teams WRs other receivers get tired let him run around and make game saving tackles. Our Run D even looked better with that formation I think WP out did himself.

Now keep improving, like Canty, Ware and Ellis are doing they looked great and on a short week after that stretch of East Games.

Thanks for the Link to www.channelsurfer.net I tested it work great on high speed.

Then NFL hijack channel has stolen the best game. Seems like they would have ironed out the contracts prior to creating the channel

Happy Thanksgiving

I have to say that I don't like this matchup for us. The Packer defense is playing better than Dallas' is, and they have the kind of passing attack that can really victimize the Cowboys.

The key to victory will have to be our front 7 getting to Favre consistently and forcing him into being the Brett Favre who tries to do to much and puts the ball in the defender's hands.

We definitely need to find a way to get deep on the outside if they take away the over-the-top routes to Owens, which is what I suspect they will do.

Also, somebody help Kosier, he's starting to look a lot like Marco Rivera.

Cowboys need to focus on pass coverage. Farve is gonna throw whether there's pressure or not. Our DBs HAVE to disrupt the receivers. What use is Favre's arm if nobody's open? GB can't beat us with their running game.

Packers dont scare me at all. They have no running game to talk of and if they let Farve pass everydonw i know our front 7 well be all over him. He wont have the time like he did against the sucky Lions.

You cant possible be serious about Kosier, he got beat once and had to hold, besides that you havent heard his name anounce at all this year. Does his job and not heard from, means no pentalites...

I think they biggest worry will be recievers if Crayton can not go, Hurd and Austin was not getting open enough...

i am so discussed but a lil happy at the cleveland browns right now. i just knew that we would have mcfadden from arkansas with their #1 pick next yr but the browns continue to win and possibly win their division.

i'm a college football huge fan and i don't know of any great nor good wideouts coming out this year. what do you think about chad johnson coming to bid D?

I feel the one area that the Cowboys will have a big advantage is in the running game. Sure Green Bay has been running the ball better lately, but I think the Cowboys have a great run defense and should easily be able to make the Packers one dimensional. Let this good Cowboy O-line dominate and unleash Jones and Barber. I feel if this happens, the Packers have no answer for it. If we get ourselves into a passing affair, then we are more evenly matched.

Hijack? you can't highjack something that belongs to you. Besides it seems to me that the cable companys are being the jackasses here. It's the NFL's product, (oddly just like the network, hence the name) they have the cards, and if you don't like not having the NFL network, then either go somewhere and watch it, or change cable companys, which i believe is the NFL's point. Not that any of this matters to me, just stop whinning about it

Yes Mick finally Roy is used the right way sit his butt when the pass is the primary concern and I also thought the absence on Crayton was huge in Romos lack of looks to the opposite side but I love the fact that Tony still made the plays he had too, the one INT was a tipped ball by TO and the DB so you can hardly blame Tony for that one and a bad snap on the same play, I hope Crayton is ready this week and I love Hurd but he just cant get open like Pat Crayton can but I hope to see some 4 WR sets against these Packers and force some of their 3rd and 4th CBs to cover TO as they move him around

If all customers start changing away from TimeWarner they will get the message and make a deal with the NFL network thats why I switched away from them if they get the NFL network I will switch back but the NFL is not responsible for this mess its TimeWarner and other cable companys who are too cheap to get the channel but like I said if their customer base starts leaving they will get it
