Mick Shots - Jan. 18

StarThe Cowboys have been pretty fortunate when it comes to their coaching staff the past few days, being able to retain Jason Garrett as offensive coordinator and bring on Hudson Houck to replace Tony Sparano as offensive line coach. Remember, you don’t get to pick and choose your assistants. They have to be available, and I’m thinking replacing Garrett and presenting a young quarterback like Tony Romo with a new offense and coach might have been disruptive. And with the much-respected Houck, he moves back in without being a stranger to guys on the offensive staff and the head coach.

StarYou know, the more I think about it, the more Tom Coughlin’s off-the-cuff remark last week was right on. When asked one of those perfunctory questions predictably asked head coaches in the situation he was in, Coughlin shot back to media members something to the effect, you guys must have a “book with a stack of questions,” meaning very few can think for themselves. That is what is happening now with the dire predictions being made for the Phillips-Garrett relationship.

StarOK, in case you guys missed the caller to Talkin’ Cowboys who suggested the best way for the Chargers to cover Randy Moss on Sunday, this one is for you: “Put the woman who received the 500-foot temporary restraining order in the end zone.”

StarAnd the scores . . . hard to pick against the home teams in the conference championship games, so that means we’re going with the Patriots to move to 18-0 and the Packers to give Brett Favre a chance to possibly bow out on top a la John Elway, that is, providing frostbite from a three-degree high being predicted in Green Bay Sunday doesn’t cause everyone to succumb first.

Well, I like Hudson Houck. He's won Super Bowls in Dallas and has worked with both Phillips and Garrett before. But they're all going to have to show me that they know how to prevent the Cowboys' annual late-season fade. After eleven years, it's more than a habit; it's a predisposition. And it sucks.

As regards to the media, I stand by the old saying. There are no stupid questions, only stupid people who ask questions.

Oh, yeah, and extortion will work well against Randy Moss.

I'll take the Chargers over the Patriots, in the biggest upset of all time, and the Packers over the Giants. Then I'll take Green Bay over San Diego in the Super Bowl. Anything to convince Brett Favre to retire.

I'm not convinced retaining JG was a great move.  Putting injured and ineffective players on the field (T.O. and TG as well as TR with his hand) was, in hind sight, a questionable move at best.  The Chargers won with their backups against the world champs.  Why couldn't we have just accepted what it was, and put Johnson, and Hurd, and Austin on the field, to try to win the game?  Why put T.O. on the field, if he was injured?  Why put TG on the field, if we knew he didn't have the speed we all know he needed to be effective?  Why leave Tony in the game, if we knew his hand had be re-injured (reportedly) on the 4th play of the game?   Even if we had lost, at least we would have lost with healthy players, that may have given us the best chance to win the game and move on?

Again, I don't know.  As fans, we are always left in the dark about what is really going on, until after the fact.  If at all.  But it just makes no sense to me to put injured and ineffective players on the field, if you have any other option.  Look what the Chargers were able to accomplish, when they accepted where they were.

That's why I question JG's decision making ability.  Unless he was told, this is what you're going to do.

It all gives me cause for pause.

Go Cowboys!!!!

I for one am glad we got to keep JG. At least one more year. Our guys will know his system better and with Houck as Oline coach. He knows what it takes to make it to the big game and I'm hoping he can bring it out in our MONSTER line. That's what won the  rings in the 90's.......

Definitely glad that we kept Garrett as the OC/Asst. Head. He is a bright young coach, and will be the next Head Coach of the Dallas Cowboys!

Hudson Houck is a great hire. This guy knows how to put a great offensive line together, and has the players here to get it done. (Minus Flo Adams Please!).

GO COWBOYS!!!

Willa451, I had to totally but respectfully disagree with everything you wrote.

My lasting impression of Austin was a guy who dropped two "gimmes" against the Skins.  I know he was open on one play which would have been a TD...BUT he still had to catch the ball if it was thrown to him...which I still believe was doubtful.

T.O. is the man.  Injured or not he will win his battles.  He was wide-open on that crossing pass at the twenty Romo blew which would have put Dallas up 21 to 14.  They had to settle for a fieldgoal.

The best thing about keeping Garrett is that Romo does not need to learn another offense from some new OC.  Garrett still has to prove he can make adjustments in the game.  I didn't see any of that against the Giants.

Soothsayer, man that cut to the bone.  When you have a great team, like we did in the 90s, you can have expectations.  When you have a promising team you can have hopes.  Going into this year, I had nothing but a concession speech prepared.

Are we sure JG will be gone next year, rather than Wide Phillips retiring and JG becoming our head coach? Let's keep our guy and start looking for an OC who can maintain some continuity.  Wide only takes up space, right?

Wade should be the head coach of this team and Jason should be the OC and assistant. My opinion is that teams were jumping the gun on him to make him a head coach before his time. He will get the oppertunity in the future. I am glad he has stayed here.......I believe he is an asset to this team.....and I would like for him to realize his success here as opposed to somewhere else. Someone said "Wade only takes up space" That is such a wrong comment..............You just need to look at the performance of our defense to see the benefit that Wade has brought!! This year was the first time in a long time, that we have been able to put pressure on the other teams QB...............During the Parcells regime...........this type of pressure and result was never seen. We definetely came up short to expectations this year....but we absolutely need to give Wade and Jason (as well as others) credit for a extremely successfull season in many aspects!! Hopefully next year we can finish the job!!!!!

Truely we've brought back in Hudson Houck, he ran the O-Line in the 90's and they dominated and now with the success that our line had this year; we'll only get better and see those D-linemen get winded earlier Yes

I agree Raydio941.  And, I'll probably get hammered like a tent peg again for saying this, but, part of that is the QB and OCs fault.  To put the game in the hands of someone who was obviously not playing well on that day, in a playoff game, was not a wise choice.   If he had been playing lights out all day long, I could have seen it.  But as it stood, you kind of have to question why he was even on the field for that play; seeing as how you knew it was this play, or go home.

Go Cowboys!!!

Me personally, I'm disgusted at this Garrett thing. He didn't deserve any more money from Jerry Jones. Hell, as far as I'm concerned he still needs to prove he's not a half season wonder as an offensive coordinator. The Cowboys weren't nearly as scary as they were after mid-November compared to before. And these teams wanting to hire him away?? Based on what?? His 'resume`' is thinner than frozen over ice in Florida. And the Ravens don't have any Romo's, Witten's, and T.O's to make a coordinator look better than what he is. Dallas scored 20 points more than they did the season before Garrett came aboard, and if Bledsoe didn't spend the first 6 games screwing up we might've scored more last year. Garrett walked into an excellent situation. Hell, I could've coordinated this offense and they still would've been top 3. If I was Jones would've said to Garrett, "Go to Baltimore/Atlanta. With the mess those two teams are in you'll be lucky to still have your job in two seasons. The Cowboys? We'll still be right here, winning the division, making the playoffs, and being an upper tier team."

Wade Phillips has done MORE for this team than Garrett has by any stretch. The calming atmosphere is Wade. The increased sacks and turnovers is Wade. Romo and T.O. not playing on eggshells is Wade. Hell, Garrett is LUCKY to be with the Cowboys if you ask me, because Jones DID NOT have to take a chance on a guy who's only been a QB coach for 2 years. But he did.....and THIS is how Garrett rewards him, by taking a week off before a huge playoff game while the team is in its best position in the playoffs in a decade? Please.

I'm so disgusted right now with how things have gone the last couple weeks.

Watching the Giants win against the Packers makes me sick. Had we not made mistakes, we should definitely be the ones in the superbowl! BTW, did anyone else see Plaxico torch Al Harris TIME AFTER TIME!! Maybe, just maybe Jacques Reeves is not so bad as a number 3? Let's remember that is was the first year Reeves saw any real action. He has room for improvement. He also has room to add about 10  pounds of muscle and still keep his speed. To me, it wasn't that Reeves is so bad, as much as Plaxico is so good. Just ask Al Harris.

NYG VS. GB for the NFC title.... just the sound of that made me sick. Watching the Boys just let that game slip away is still eating at me. I still cant believe the held the Giants to -2 yards the whole second quarter then give up the score with no time left. I just hope Terry Glenn is gonna come back healthy because we need another WR, not saying anything bad about crayton he was very good but we need more speed out there

No, Jacques Reeves really IS that bad. He got lit up by every single team they played this year. The opposing OC's job was to design plays to go at 35. Period. End of story.

I keep asking why we cut Aaron Glenn in the preaseason in favor of Jock-left-on-the-ground Reeves? Nobody seems to have an answer. But it's these kinds of bonehead personnel decisions that cost a team in the playoffs. As for the coaching thing, Garrett is a fine OC, and I give him credit for knowing he wasn't ready to make the next jump. Face it, this was a team with a first-year staff and they made some freshman year mistakes. My question is, do they have the stones to go fix what is broken?

This team has big holes at CB, WR and potentially, LT.

The answer isn't finding a way to land McFadden, it's finding a way to land Assante Samuel, DeSean Jackson and Sam Baker (or some combination of studs to fill our gaps).

The Giants deserve to be there and I, for one, am rooting for them because if they win it all, the least we can do is say we lost to the eventual champion. Besides, I hate the Cheatriots.

I was hoping for the pack to win because living in Jersey I have to deal with alot of ignorance. Now the Giants fans love Eli. They torched him all year long around here even before this game but now he's the greatest. I was telling these people since last year that Eli had what it took to win playoff games. I have to root for the Pats even though I can't stand Belichek.

I'm glad Garrett is staying because he's a class guy and very smart. I hope he's smart enough to learn from his mistake. That mistake was devising a game plan to run the ball all day no matter what. Sure we had a 20 play 10 min drive and scored but big deal....the Giants scored in 46 seconds...why? because they threw the ball on a secondary that's average at best. Why you don't throw the ball all day long on the Giants depleted secondary..like they did the first 2 times successfully I don't know. Even with a less than 100% T.O. and T.G. you have Witten and Crayton and Hurd. Go with 4 or 5 receiver sets. Man I'm still sick about this because the Giants are going to the SB and not us. Oh well at least it's them that will get torched all night long :)
