Mick Shots - March 13

Star       Not to be an I-told-you-so, but did I not repeatedly say there was no way the Arizona Cardinals were going to let Larry Fitzgerald get out of town, that too many of you became deluded with this idea the Cowboys could trade for him? So there goes another one of those “rumors” down the drain, Fitzgerald signing a four-year, $40 million deal, with $30 million guaranteed, a $15 million signing bonus, a $5 million roster bonus due in ’09 and $17 million in his pocket for this year. Best part, he’s only 24, meaning when this contract expires he’ll still be only 28, worthy of another big-time deal – and signing bonus – as long as he continues to produce at his current pace and remains healthy. Maybe we’ll be addressing him again then.

Star        You just never know why your next job opportunity might surface. Take Cowboys unrestricted cornerback Nate Jones, visiting the Minnesota Vikings on Wednesday. Why are the Vikings interested in this predominant special teams player who has played some dime and subbed into the nickel this past year when either Terence Newman or Anthony Henry were out injured? Well how about this: Jones went to Rutgers when current Vikings special teams coach Paul Ferraro was the defensive coordinator. Good a reason as any.

Star           If the Seattle Seahawks should release running back Shaun Alexander, just two seasons removed from his 2005 NFL MVP performance, rushing for 1,880 yards and 27 touchdowns, is this more an indictment of Alexander’s declining rushing skills or what the Seahawks think of a less expensive Julius Jones? Because as usual, releasing high-priced veterans just a couple of years into a new contract is expensive. Alexander was given an $11.6 million signing bonus after his MVP season on a five-year deal, meaning the team still must account for $6.9 million in prorated signing bonus. So if he is released this year before June 1, all would accelerate into Seattle’s cap. Can’t do that even if the move would save his $4.77 million base salary. If released after June 1, then the Seahawks are hit for $2.3 this year and a whopping $4.6 million next. Stay tuned here.

Kinda sucks what happened to Alexander.  He was a good RB, and it kinda makes me wonder if the loss of production had anything to do with Steve Hutchinson leaving.  Once Hutch landed in Minn., their RBs have been very productive.

First it was Jacques "Why's everybody always picking on me?" Reeves left. Now Nate "the best thing I've ever done is knock Brett Favre out of a game that he wasn't playing very well in" Jones could be leaving?

Oh well.

I think Julius will do well for Seattle. Julius was underused in our current Garrett-precious Romo- throw constantly offense. Alexander still has some gas left in his tank... he just was hurt the last two seasons. I hope we can pick up some speed in this year's draft. Maybe a CB, WR, and RB with some speed would be good pickups. Go 'Boys!

Never expected for Fitzgerald to end up here but its fun to wonder, what if.

The obvoius thing is that the Cowboys are going to have to fill in the gaps mainly thru the draft. Running Back, Corner, Wide Receiver and now Special Teams.

Alexander is a contract player with no heart.  It's no coincidence that his MVP year came in his contract season.  Once he got the money, he went back to being a gutless runner who only plays when he wants to.  The league is plagued with guys like this.

We spent a ton of money into re-investing for Flozell Adams. He better be worth it, because we could have made a run at Fitzy.  I thought last year we invested some draft picks into tackles, I was really hoping one would be ready to fill Flo's shoes, I would have liked to see Fitzy here in Big D.

Football Outsider pretty much predicted Alexander's fall.  Anytime you give a RB 370 carries in a season, unless you're named Eric Dickerson, your performance will drop off.

I don't know why so many people rag on Jacques Reeves.  While he did get beat sometimes, I thought he was a more than capable back-up Corner.  If fact, if I recall correctly, the Cowboys were winning quite a few games with him in the starting line-up.  During the last month of the season, i.e. when Reeves was not starting, the Cowboys limped in with a 2-2 record, then lost the playoff game in January.

The Cowboys were a top 10 defense with Reeves in the starting line-up.  So I can understand why the Texans would be happy to have him on their squad.

I'm not suggesting that Reeves is a great cornerback.  Obviously, there is a reason Newman and Henry were ahead of him on the depth chart.  But I don't believe Reeves cost the Cowboys any games last year.  So why begrudge the guy cashing in on his solid, if unspectacular play?  Just who do the Cowboys have that is going to step into the nickel corner role, now?

Spagnola, you're an idiot!!!  As for your "I told you so's", you only display the other "wanna be knowledgeable" idiot fans that obviously don't know much about football and business deals.  Any wise person can calculate which free agents/or players under contracts can be attained according to their remaining contract balances and the Cowboys' available funds.  You just happen to know there's enough idiots out there whom send in comments for you to use to try to bolster yourself as being all knowledgeable, which you're definitely not!  So do us Texas citizens a favor and blow off into some other state's sunset cuz we don't want idiotic and smart-mouth reporters like you!

Reeves didn't cost us any games, How about the playoff game. The Giants never even looked at Newman's side and only threw a few passes at Henry. Just watch the tape and you will see Reeves giving a big custion and getting beat every time. Also, lets not forget the fifteen yard face mask penality at the end of the first half that set up the Giants end of the half touchdown. The only Cowboy who did more to lose the playoff game than Reeves was Patrick Crayton. He dropped a sure td and stop running his route on another sure td.

I think you hit it right on the head. no such thing is a good RB w/o a good line not since Barry Sanders and Walter. The Cowboys of the 90's were great largely in part because of that Massive and aggressive line, and Troy and Emmitt understood that.

Alexander is a good example of a running back losing durability fast. We better get a good complimentary back to Barber. Emmitt was durable but he was able to get away from danger most of the time. He got clobbered a few times and put is hand in a facemask breaking bones but not one injury he took kept him away very long.

I don't expect many people can be tough like Emmitt or Farve I just hope Barber has some luck to stay healthy. If Barber can learn anything from Owens, I hope it's that toughness in mindset to shrug off pain an play through it. At least Barber got the chance to fill the role.

JJ was fed to the wolves his first year and got hurt bad. I think that impacted his time here in Dallas. He had some great games but he just seemed to run scared. We can't just grab a rookie and expect him to be the savior right away. Emmitt Smith only comes around once in a lifetime.

well i guess the 'i' word is acceptable here on these blogs... good to know in case it comes in handy to tell off these guys whos blogs are not being asked to be posted or opinions are not being asked to be given, or "face" not on the screen talking about the cowboys. overdramatic, hell even maybe metaphorically incorrect,,, yea and like overkill---but an idiot,,, mr cowboy spagnolia himself. never!!! Not with that sesame street look.

Well lets make a good team better by not spending so much!!! Lets make the team stronger for the years to come by bringing in hungry players in the draft, and when they get that good that demand so much money then, lets plug in the drafted kid. sounds good, but why does that not work, most of the time. WELL we could always draft the number one receiver every year and if it does not work lets fire the coach, now i sound like the idiot i really am. but you mickey keep putting stuff out there for us to read, but nobody leaves any comments, cause you leave not room for error. LIKE YOU TOLD US SO!!!

Well, Mr. 5rings1star, I always believe championships start at the top.  And though I truly admire Bum's son, he's no Bill Belichick.  You're right.  The past 10-12 drafts, the Cowboys have repeatedly passed up the best available players only to drop down for extra picks and how many corners, safeties, and linebackers have we picked up and not a single one can cover a receiver all game long so far?  Come on!  Are you telling me receivers are faster than defensive backs?  I don't think so.  You don't see the Patriots holding back in hiring the best available coaches, players, etc.  Hell, they tend to get bigtime draft players every single year.  I wonder why.  Hmmm... let's see, someone out there truly likes hiring for success versus fame.  The Patriots remind me of the Spurs of San Antonio.  Those owners must have their heads straight.  Look at all professional sports in the DFW Metroplex.  They've all become a laughing stock and everyone here knows it!!!  This is not the prideful Cowboys organization of the Schramm/Landry and a younger Jones/Johnson eras!

This season should be good with all of, or most of our own players coming back. That Zach Thomas move I question, because we have a young fresh and ready Bobby Carpenter ready to wreek havoc on someones offense.

But please Jerry don`t give up those picks for Mcfadden, there are other good backs out there that could step in and complient our offense.

Well let's say it was nice to get a response as to what i have said, Like I always say opinions are like bellybutton holes we all got them, some of us like to pick them in front of people, and compare. Well till the next time, will not try to get caught up with a personal argument just maybe a ideal. The Cowboys are exactly where they shold be I think, how many time can you say the Giants also lost in the first round after winning the division, and losing to the eagles, only to finnaly winning it all, with a total loser like eli, but a good defense like they had. We are exactly where we need to be, now let us go where we need to go. draft well Jones, use the force not the paycheck. sorry if i hit a nerve Mr. Vallygman.

Forget Davis, he couldn't make a starting spot and he wasn't durable enough on special teams to last. Once he got hurt he never really came back the same. Of course we need someone on special teams who can make some plays but you have 11 people and they all have to be held accountable. They all need to learn to tackle and maybe we can depend on them more. Sorry, but I don't see losing Davis as a problem. Anyone else who wants to follow Bill P can go as far as I am concerned.

Loyalty should be with a team first. They're all over payed as it is and to watch players pledge allegiance to money over a team is sick. Football is the best sport in the world, which so few people actually get to play professionally. It makes me sick to see a multi-millionaire shrug off loyalty for more money.

I long for the old days when men played for the sport and the thrill of the game. When men knew how to tackle and hit. Today these guys are so afraid to hit anyone they let them bounce off and gain more yards or a touchdown.

Jason Witten shows guts like those days. He took a broken jaw and came back 2 weeks later. Look what he did this year. Got his hat knocked into space and kept his mind aware and fought for a monster gain. Where are these old champion hearts? Give me someone who wants to play because their hearts in it for the game.

I don't want to see some flashy selfish garbage player drafted just so he can flash his bling. Give me a man who wants to fight for everything and bring home to Dallas a ring!

Seems to me I see a whole lotta the "I got my money now so I'll protect my health" in the NFL these days. Too many whinny babies playing pro ball. They should go back to college and hope to find new shoes left in the bushes and cars left running in the parking lots again. Surely there are some players out there who want to play the game.

Wanna bet on how long Barber will be a Cowboy if he has a big year this year? (Which I don't believe he'll have because he'll either wear out early in the season and be replaced by a rookie or he'll get injured from trying to carry too many linebackers because or offensive line is designed for pass blocking and can't effectively run block.)
