Mick Shots - May 29

Here are some leftover notes from Wednesday’s OTA session you might be interested in since more pressing issues seemed to push these to the backburner.

StarThe Cowboys didn’t waste any time getting first-round pick Mike Jenkins involved in the defense. When they went to nickel formations, Terence Newman moved into the slot as usual and Jenkins was the guy working at left cornerback with the first unit.

StarAnd while Kevin Burnett and Bradie James were the nickel linebackers, the Cowboys still employed the one-backer formation, with Roy Williams moving up alongside Burnett and another safety entering the game, in this case since Pat Watkins already was playing for the missing Ken Hamlin, it was Courtney Brown.

StarTrying to make him as versatile as possible, the Cowboys have tackle James Marten, last year’s third-round draft choice, working at left guard with the second unit. Marten reminds he played guard two years at Boston College and that he actually felt more comfortable returning to the left side after backing up at right tackle last year.

StarOh, in case you are wondering, Pat McQuistan was working at right tackle with the second unit while Doug Free was at left tackle.

StarThere sure was a covey of guys working on returning punts, including some of the usual suspects - Patrick Crayton, Terence Newman, Anthony Henry, Marion Barber - but also a few new guys - Danny Amendola, Quincy Butler, Justin Phinisee and Jerron Wishom.

StarEvidently not throwing around feint praise, the coaching staff had Tank Johnson taking some reps with the first-team defense at nose tackle.

StarAs was suspected last week, first-year corner Tyler Everett from Ohio State, is working at safety.

StarSaw Courtney Brown step in front of Terrell Owens for what nearly was an interception.

StarTake a listen to Bradie James when talking about attending these OTA workouts: “It is voluntary but you want to be accountable to your teammates,” and this was in reference to no one in particular missing the practices. And when asked why he was here, James said, “I volunteer to be here. The team is my family, and I’m going to be here.”

StarSure, you remember Reggie Love, the one-time Duke wide receiver and basketball player on the Blue Devils’ national championship team whose athletic skills so intrigued Bill Parcells he was signed to a free-agent deal by the Cowboys in 2005. He didn’t make the team, but still has turned into a celebrity in his own right. He is serving as Barack Obama’s “body man,” and as one national story describes, “the personal aide who shadows the senator and anticipates everything he needs - and everything he does not need.” Love works out in the morning with the presidential candidates and as he says, just does “stuff” for Obama. He not’s a bodyguard, but the guy who just gets things done for Obama, who says of Reggie, “There’s not doubt that Reggie is cooler than I am.” Just never know what doors open when the NFL doors close.

Man it's been a while!

Good the younger guys are getting reps.

Forget the whiners like Ellis and Hamlin.  We don't need them here if they don't wanna be here.

Both of them are backed up by two young and very talented players in Pat Watkins and Anthony Spencer, respectively.  And both of them are ready to break out especially Watkins who is entering his 3rd year now.

PS- Wasn't Mike Jenkins a punt returner at USF? Why wasn't he receiving punts but Anthony Henry was?  Typo maybe?

why dont we try to trade Ellis with a 3rd and 4th pick for Roy in detroit if Ellis keeps crying about something every year hes like my 10 year old sister she cries and cries until she gets her way I mean give me a break hes like 33 years old he needs to act like it, And jenkins it would be great if he can play the opposite of Newman take nothing away from henry but he is unreliable to the standards of staying healthy and Jenkins is faster to so in that i hope jenkins can sure up that position.

Is this foreshadowing that Colombo is probably going to be the one that gets left out in the cold when it comes to re-upping of players and salary cap room???

Man..........I'll tell you..........I am sick of reading about these NFL guys, snubbing contracts they have already agreed to!!! They sign a 5-year deal and then 2-years later, want to rip it up for an extension and more money!! Here in the real world where I work...........I have signed a 5-year work contract..........I have already worked 2-years of the contract..........if I would now go to my company and tell them I want a new contract.........extension..........more money............they would laugh at me!!!!! NFL, certainly is business for these guys...........but they sure are getting greedy here of late!!!! Ellis.............please dont write any more about his paranoia............we know him well now............its a yearly event.........I love watching him play...........he's a great player with heart..............but please Greg.............Spare us the drama!!!!!!!!!!!

Ellis should be spending less time pouting and more time helping the young guys developed as you would expect from a leader of our team with pro bowl experience. The guy needs some prozac or something!!!!

Man - I can't believe it.  Ellis is such a woman.  He and Hamlin should get together on their off time and go shopping for shoes or something.

Why even worry about what Ellis is rambling about.   He will be back in training camp complaining and still playing the whole yearf for us and getting double digits in sacks.  so deal with his whinning and let him do his job.

Same with Hamlin, he will be here when the time is right and will play this year for us and if Watkin's is ready to be a starter next year we let him go.  Man why get your pampers in a bunch over whinny players.  Happens all the time and they still play and peform....get over it

The problem is this. If these guys agree to a contract they should not be half way into it and say well I am playing better so u need to pay me more. JJ took a huge chance last year with matching Ellis's stupid insurance policy. I think JJ showed some deep dedication to Ellis. It is time for Ellis to show his dedication to his team.

Ellis is made because Spencer is getting snaps.  Source says he "doesn't trust Cowboys' Motives"

Glenn does not want to sign a contract reducing his salary from 1.7m to 500k if the knee gives out

Hamlin wants $$ hasn't signed 1 year tender but has stated he will sign if a deal hasn't been worked out by the deadline

I hope the coaching staff ignores Ellis and move on with the younger guys. I have never in my entire life witness a crying ass like Ellis. Release him immediately so he can go home and use his rocking chair.

Ellis is unbelievable......it amazes me that Jerry puts up with it and it should also amaze Ellis, but I guess Ellis is somehow missing that. Has Ellis had any severe concussions???

Ellis is an absolute idiot, but he is a really good football player.  Hopefully Jerry kisses his butt for a few more years and we can keep getting high production out of him.  He's a pain, but he's awfully good.  Eventually we can move on to Spencer as our full time man.

Cowboy Marine.............I entirely agree with your comment on Ellis. I dont think anybody is saying he is not a good football player on this team. He is a great player..........But he should also be a leader...........and whining is not the qualities of a leader!!! Ellis would be a fan favorite, if he would just get on with it........stop the whining and bad examples of holdig out all the time. I really think he needs prozac!!!! ha ha :)

Rookie salaries could be what drives these veterans to want more money. When an unproven rookie is offered more to play than a guy with years of proven playing time it can certainly make one resentful. The NFL needs to come up with an equitable solution to this situation whether that be rookie caps, rookie hiring ranges or some other system. Maybe then the Ellis' and Hamlins of the NFL (and other teams have them too) would be satisfied with their contracts.
