Don't Believe The Giant Hype

The local media would have us believe that the Cowboys will face a wounded Giants team this Sunday.  Some say that this is a team spiraling downward increasing in velocity with each swirl as their season goes down the drain.

Just look at them.  Their coach is criticizing their young quarterback, who has been anything but Phillip Rivers (dig).  That quarterback can’t seem to get the ball to his loud-mouth, yet pretty talented tight end who, by the way, is criticizing the coach’s decisions.  The recently-announced retiree running back has some choice words about coaching decisions as well…for the second time.  The injured, Pro Bowl defensive end criticizes the pouting wide receiver and then blames it on the media.

And you guys thought that Owens, Vanderjagt, and Parcells were full of drama.

Then the media points to the new and improved Dallas Cowboys.  The antithesis of the train wreck in New York.  The sports world is in love with the Cowboys again sparked by the experienced-rookie quarterback Tony Romo.  This kid is “cooler than a fan”.  Four of five as a starter including a huge win over the then-undefeated Colts.  He has breathed new life into this team.

The defense, led by Demarcus Ware, Bradie James and Roy Williams, have been hot even in the absence of their veteran leader Greg Ellis.  The young leaders have made plays and other guys feed off that to make plays of their own.  The product:  a big, relentlessly physical defensive squad.  Give ‘em a lead as Romo has, and they truly are a different unit.

The coach is exuding a confidence that you can just feel.  Relaxed and often engagingly amusing in his daily sparring sessions with the media.  No more bitter old man; he’s found the Fountain of Youth…again, sparked by the experienced-rook.

Even the swirling wind that surrounds Terrell Owens has subsided, for now, to a soft whisper with only slight gusts each time he drops a pass.  But a touchdown quickly calms the air and all is quiet again.

Mike Vanderjagt, the Cowboys biggest problem, is no longer a problem.  Who knows what Gramatica will do?  What we do know is Vandy wasn’t gettin’ it done, so let’s see if a clean slate may restore some faith in the kicking game.

The arrow is pointing up for the Cowboys and down for the Giants.

But what if we’ve been duped by the media?  What if we’re looking at a half full glass in Dallas and comparing it to a half empty glass in New York?

Could the Giants’ three game skid be akin to the inconsistencies of this Cowboys team through the first 8 games?  In this most recent road bump, the Giants got stomped by the division leading Bears, took a beating in Jacksonville, and let a young Titans team steal  their last game in Tennessee.

Is that much different from portions of the Cowboys season?

The Cowboys lost to that same Jacksonville squad.  The Cowboys allowed Washington to steal the game in DC.  And just like the Giants got blasted by the Bears, the Cowboys got blasted by the Giants.  Which glass is truly half full?

Before this 3-game losing streak that the media so readily references, the Giants were on a 5-game winning streak and had won 6 of their first 8 games (including their win in Dallas against the Cowboys).

This is not to say that the Cowboys will meet certain disaster this Sunday in the Meadowlands.  The point is that New York is still very talented and capable.  Although key injuries to both their Pro Bowl defensive ends (Strahan & Umenyora), their best offensive tackle (Pettigout), their best wide receiver (Toomer is far more reliable than Burress – on the field and off), one of their playmaking linebackers (Arrington), and their best cornerback (Madison) have made them less explosive, they are still very dangerous.

So, don’t buy the hype.  The Giants are a good football team and the Cowboys will need to play a very good game to beat them on the road.

deag-i dont care who we play right now! the cowboys are a far better team of the giants
and i truly believe they are the best in the nfl.i'm not saying this because i'm a fan of
almost 30 years, but a true football guy that see's a really great team and still growing!
still getting better and the best cowboys ball is yet to be played.

i'm taking da boys for a 12-4 record with the nfc east title.home field until we go to the bears.beat the overrated bears and go on to the big game of em all with my afc pick the charges.the giants are only scoring and avg of 17ppg.cowboys are 28.7 the best in the leauge and again still getting better and starting to gel and the right time.the defense will be a super one by the end of the regular season and getting ready for primetime.

go cowboys!!!!! i believe baby!!!

# re: Don't Believe The Giant Hype

A week ago, I thought Cowboys would lose this game.  Yesterday, I thought Dallas might win the game.  But I read an article (Sporting News) in which it said it was very hard to pass football in Giants statdium because of wind.  Now I am not sure.  If you cannot pass ball, you have to run.  They have a better running back.  I do not know how Romo will perform.  Can he throw balls well in the wind?

It will be a tough fight.  If it is a close game, either team will win.  But this time, I do not think Giants have the offense to run away with the score.

# re: Don't Believe The Giant Hype

The main problems are injuries to Strahan, Umenyiora, arrington, Petigot, etc.

Without their DEs there's no edge pass rush and they average a TO more with Strahan in there.

Also, Manning has struggled to the tune of 6 picks in the last three games.

I'm not sure if the DEs are back this week maybe Strahan is but with Romo getting rid of the ball, I don't think it will make a big difference.

Good points, but I think the key point is that the Cowboys have positive momentum, the Giants negative.

"Romo-sexually charged Dallas Cowboys" ? I understand the wordplay but that term just really rubs me the wrong way. The Cowboys will handle the Giants in grand fashion Sunday.

# re: Don't Believe The Giant Hype

Edge goes to dallas here... they have a wounded defense that will have to put up with Romo, and if he cant bomb it then who do we have that is EXCELLENT at making short gains into a long TD? That would be T.O.! Barber and Jones will be fresh and rested, so our high ranked running game will be fine. Our defense can key in on barber well enough. I think he wont be running for much more than 100.

GOD I HOPE ROY WILLIAMS GETS TO TEE OFF ON SHOCKEY!!!!!

i hate that all the media types are now on the boys bandwagon (it's more fun to be the underdog). and everyone ought to be aware how fierce a wounded dog can be (the giants). still i think the cowboys too have somthing to prove. the giants are the last team to really man-handle the boys. cowboys 35-10. and shockey leaves with a concusion thanks to #31

hold up on the running the table to 12-4 lets let the season play out if there is a trap game left this one with the G-men is it.i think its a huge game for both teams we win and the division is in site they win and the cards are in their hand to win the division.all things being equal we should come home as the winner in this one,but all things are rarely equal in this series,im thinking coughlins job is on the line as this team APPEARS to fall apart, are things as bad in the locker room as they are painted or has the chess game started well before kick off? damn sunday cant get here fast enough, lets go cowboys!!!!!!!!!!!!

If after all the G-Men talking,  all the "Ballin" Jump Shots and all the G-Men bashing Cowboys -- this team does not come out like maniacs on fire -- I would be disappointed.

I really expect the Cowboys to play the best game of the season and lay some serious wood to the Giants. I want a game that makes the Giant Trainers crying.

Giants are only clearly better in two spots -- Tail Back and Field Goal Kicker. That is it.

Cowboys are so much more talented and skilled than the Giants.

# ESPN Article

The New York Giants are coming apart right before our eyes. But it wasn't too long ago that the Giants were still trying to get along. In fact, it was Monday. That's when they held a players-only meeting in hopes of moving past their fourth-quarter collapse against the Titans and the losing streak it continued.

But it wasn't really a players-only meeting. I was in the locker room that day, too. (The ever-insecure Tom Coughlin hired me as a spy.) And this is a transcript of what transpired.

Michael Strahan: OK, guys, let's get started. Is everybody here? Great. Plex, can you get the door?

Plaxico Burress: No.

Strahan: Why not?

Burress: It's a little out of my reach.

Strahan: You're kidding, right?

Burress: Not at all. If the door was right here where I could get to it without any exertion I would gladly close it for you. But it's not. Somebody put it way over there. And it wasn't me so I shouldn't have to go out of my way to get to it. That's not my style. Sorry.

Strahan: Geez. What an @#$%*!^. OK, then. Eli? Can you stop whimpering in the corner for a moment to close the door so we can start our meeting?

Eli Manning: Golly. Sure thing, Michael. I'd be happy to. Thanks for asking. I'm just glad you fellas think I can be of some help to you. It sure means a lot.

Strahan: Whatever, dork. Alright. Let's get started. The reason for this players-only meeting is because we need to pull together and start winning.

Tiki Barber: Exactly. I agree. We have to start getting me more carries.

Strahan: Uh, well, that could be one way I suppose, Tiki.

Barber: No, that's the only way. Getting me more carries is the most important thing. Trust me on this. I'm smarter than all of you. I know it. You know it. Even Coach Coughlin has come to realize I am his intellectual superior. How did you like that word, huh? "Intellectual." That's five syllables.

Strahan: Very impressive, Tiki. Thanks. Now that we've all heard Tiki's thoughts, does anyone else have any suggestions on how we can turn our season around?

Jeremy Shockey: Ooh! Ooh! Pick me! Pick me! I have an idea.

Strahan: Jeremy, the floor is yours. Let's hear your thoughts.

Shockey: We need more unity on this team, right? So why don't we all go get the same tattoo? That would be so badass. I say we all get a Limp Bizkit tattoo. That band is awesome and they totally have the hard-core attitude we need here. Who's with me? And you better say you're in or I'll assume you're afraid of getting a tattoo and are a scared, little, wussy girl. And I don't want no wussy girls on my team. I'm from The U, baby! The U!

Strahan: Whoa there, Jeremy. Dial it back a bit. Can somebody tranq him? Thanks. Let's hear from some other veterans -- Ike Hilliard?

Amani Toomer: Who & me?

Strahan: Well, yeah. You're Ike Hilliard, aren't you?

Toomer: No. I'm Amani Toomer. Ike Hilliard hasn't been on the team for a couple of years. I think he's on the Buccaneers now.

Strahan: Really? Hmm. I always did get you guys confused. Well, whoever you are, let's hear your thoughts.

Toomer: Thank you. Listen up, guys. I've been on this team a long time and one thing I know is ...

Strahan: Sorry, Ike. But I'm going to cut you off. We're running short on time here.

Tim Hasselbeck: Hey, that's rude to cut someone off when they're trying to talk.

Strahan: What do you know about it, third-stringer?

Hasselbeck: A lot, actually. My wife, Elisabeth, is a host on "The View" and Rosie O'Donnell always cuts her off and it hurts her feelings.

Shockey: You watch "The View"? Come over here. I'm going to kick your ass.

Strahan: Somebody hit Shockey with another tranq dart. Tim, I understand what you're saying. My apologies to Ike Hilliard. And, Tim, please have your wife ask Rosie O'Donnell if she can fill in on the line until I get healthy. That lady is a beast.

Mathias Kiwanuka: I know I'm new here, but can I say something?

Strahan: Sure thing, rookie.

Kiwanuka: I want to share with you guys something an old coach once told me. It really fired me up and is the most valuable advice I have ever received. I was going through a bad time, like we are now, and my coach pulled me aside, looked me square in the eyes and said ...

Strahan: Uh, yes? And said what? You seemed like you had something really good going there and then you just stopped for no reason.

Kiwanuka: I know. I'm sorry. It's a bad habit of mine.

Manning: Umm, fellas? Hey, guys? You mind if I say a word or two?

Strahan: Have at it.

Manning: OK. Swell. Just give me a second here. My dad wrote down some things for me to say and I have to find the paper. He said if I read this to you guys you would respect me as a team leader.

Strahan: No, no, no, Eli. It's time to stop hiding behind your family. You're a big boy now. If you don't have anything that you want to say yourself from your own heart, then we don't want to hear it. So do you have anything to say that isn't from your daddy?

Manning: No. Not really. Well, that's not really true. I do have one thing.

Strahan: Yes? Let's hear it.

Manning: I wish you guys would stop giving me wedgies.

Strahan: Not a chance.

Barber: Hey, can we wrap this up? My wife said I have to be home by 5 p.m. today.

Jared Lorenzen: Yeah, I let's end this. I'm hungry.

Strahan: OK, OK. We're done. I hope we've all worked through some issues in this meeting and that we're all primed to beat the Cowboys this week. And remember -- anything that was discussed in this meeting stays among us, the players. Except if I need to fill some time on my radio show. Then I reserve the right to say whatever I want about any of you.

# re: Don't Believe The Giant Hype

Just becasue they say hard to pass in Giant's stadium doesnt mean Romo cant complete some short passes to TO, Glen, Crayton and Whitten.

That also limits the giants from throwing it long as well. We have improved tremendously since our last meeting and I have faith the Cowboys will conquer the Giants.

I doubt Bill an company are falling into the media spin on this weeks game with the Giants. The Giant have done quiet well against the Boy's in recent past. My main concerns are how the Boy's handle the adversities all championship teams have to face and overcome. It has become very apparrent that game officals have become increasingly aware of the need to keep games close for the sake of high viewership. Maintaining focus thru bad calls, mistakes or whatever the game, crowd, elements, whatever the goodlord desides we should endure that day is the difference between a champion, and an also ran.

# re: Don't Believe The Giant Hype

Several reasons to be concerned and not over confident.

Stopping the run...
Tiki rushed for more than 100+ in the first game and our run defense has weakened with the loss of Greg Ellis. Also, Joseph Addai & "Cadillac" Williams ran the bal pretty well against the 'boys. Both averaging more than 4+ yds per carry.

Running the ball...
Our running game was shutdown in the first game. They truly looked like Giants out there. Julius has not looked great the last couple of weeks and his yards-per-carry average is down to 4.0.

Playing on the road...
In rivalry games this is a huge factor. The Giants will get the emotional lift and their walking wounded will be inspired. 'Skins beat the 'boys without Santana Moss and with a banged up Clinton Portis...playing on the road had a lot to do with the momentum swing.I guarantee that game was in Dallas it would not have been close.

So fellas plenty to be concerned about. The good news is we are more confident and sure of our abilities than ever before thanks to Romo, a great receiving corps, a solid 1-2 punch in the backfield and a young, talented opportunistic defense. We can win...should win (see the spread)...but that doesn't mean we will.

Stay grounded...

Giants are in big trouble.  manning has lost confidence, and Dallas secondary has gained tons of confidence!  I think Manning's passing troubles will continue.  Also, his protection issues will continue; I think cowboy pass rush will have a big day; g-men o-line is nicked up; 1 or 2 backup guys have to start; same guys had problems against Titan pass rush; wait till Ware, Hatcher and party get warmed up!  Romo will pass just fine in G-stadium; he usually slings a flat, hard ball; doesnt' tend to 'loft' it (unless he intends to); his passes won't have any problems in G-stadium wind.  And we know that Coach Parcells will want to have a strong running game, with both Jones and Barber having a good game against a very nicked up G-men def line and linebackers.  Prediction: Cowboys win BIG...31-14!!

Thursday, November 30, 2006 3:56 PM by MajBitter

# re: Don't Believe The Giant Hype

If Romo has a hard time with the long passes (windy Giants Stadium), then Manning should be even worse since he's in a slump.

What I want to know is, since Parcells is concerned about the QB position getting hurt, did they use VDJ's inconsistency as a reason to cut him in order to use a different holder for the new guy, who would not be used to Romo?

# re: Don't Believe The Giant Hype

I am always leary of sure things, so I know we have to carry a big stick in NY. The Giants did beat the the Cowboys at home. That sticks in my craw. I hope we can overcome and I am optimistic to a degree. If that stadium isn't too squirrelly, I think Romo can handle it. It might even work to our advantage if it is hard for Manning to hit us deep. That is where we are most vulnerable. Spare us that, Lord. If we win this one, I think we get a big lift and it wouldn't surprise me if we don't go all the way and come out 12-4. Wouldn't that be a blessing? Sunday can't come too soon for me. What's the weather forecast in NY? That could also be a factor. Go Boys.....

I have faith in the evidence we have seen over the last month...  Don't forget about the importance of the game plan though... You can have a team of pro bowlers and still loss if your plan is bad.  If all things are equal who do you think is the better "Football" coach?  I believe its Parcells, primarily due to his pessimistic attitude.  He is ALWAYS thinking about the worst case scenario...  Coughlin is a sharp coach but way to emotional... Wonder how bad the weather will change the game??

# re: Don't Believe The Giant Hype

Well Mr. Brightside, the comments you posted don't really match well with your name, but they are very precise. I wouldn't be over confident about this game with the Giants, and I dont think the Cowboys players will be. I think they have that 36-22 loss still fresh in their minds. They know this is a key division game (1-3 record in the division), and they know if they lose then the Giants will be in the drivers seat. They dont want that to happen, so they will take advantage of the fact that the Gians are reeling and will put the nail in the coffin.

As long as the Boyz keep their penalties at a minimum and dont turn the ball over we should be in good shape.

Go Cowboys!!

If Romo throws tight spirals the wind is not going to make the ball move much. I don't think QB's stats go down that much in G-stadium.
Any team on any day can beat you. The g-men learned that last week. Cowboys just have to play the was they have been playing.

two things that will hurt the Giants this time is no Toomer (WR and Eli's security blanket) and Pettigout (LT and blindside protection)...reports are that Whitfield, his replacement, is over-compensating to the inside and closing passing lanes on the left side...also Strahan is doubtful for this game and did'nt practice today (Thursday)...it is conceivable that he could play though...none of this points to a Dallas win of course, just something to be aware of...

You know this is really sad.  The day after Thanksgiving everyone was all gung-ho, having no doubts about our Boys.  I know the midgets arent going to be a cakewalk, but come on people.  The midgets were only up a touchdown when Romo threw that last INT that went back for a TD to make them win by 14.  Do ya'll honestly think Romo is going to regress and make those same mistakes?  Well, I highly doubt it.  Yes the Giants are a good team, but our Cowboys are just as good, if not better.  I understand its good to stay grounded and keep things in perspective, but lose the negative vibes people...dont be a buzzkill.  Da Boys will destroy this team of midgets in turmoil.  Leaving no doubt who the best team in the NFC East is.  For that fact, who the best team in the whole NFC is.

The Giants are backed into a corner and will come out fighting like a caged animal.
Dallas has to be ready because the Giants are going to try to jump out to a big lead so Dallas must score first and make the Giants fight the uphill battle.
Look the Cowboys need to remember how the Giants embarrass them last time they played.
Never overlook a team! Every week in the nfl there are upsets.
I would love to see Dallas just crush the Giants nothing would make me happier than to continue to see the Giants self destruct!

# re: Don't Believe The Giant Hype

I don't want to be a "buzzkill".  I do have to say that this will be no cakewalk.  If it is, GREAT!!! I'll have visions of SuperBowl dancing in my head every night till Christmas.  However, the Giants are a different team when they play the boys.  It seems that they get up for games against the boys more than any other (as it seems with most teams we play).  Does anyone remember last year at NY?  Their crowd was so loud, our O line was doing the false start shuffle all game long (can you hear this Jason Witten??).  Expect a hostile environment and a proud, hungry team waiting for us on Sunday.

Don't get me wrong, if we're going to go all the way, we'll need character building wins like this to get us there.  It WILL be a test.  I said before the Eagles game earlier this year that they were going into a s***storm, and they did.  But like that game, the important thing is that the Boys weather the initial storm.  If they can make it out of the 1st quarter without any major disasters and a close score, they'll be in good shape.  Lets hope for a good start from the Boys and concentration on the O-line.

I'm ready for the game!!

# re: Don't Believe The Giant Hype

why does every one say the Giants beat up on us the last time?  The Giants did not beat up on the Boys, if you remember correctly the Cowboys beat up on themselves.

Even after a terrible first half and a bad start by Romo, throwing an interception for a touchdown on his first play from scrimmage, the Cowboys almost cameback and tied the game. Yeah the final score shows the Giants beating the boys by 14 but only because of a forced pass by Romo trying to tie the game up, which was intercepted and run back 96 yards for a touchdown.  Im not saying da boys outplayed the Giants but by no means did the Giants dominate the game.  The Cowboys gave them that game.  So  now that Romo and the rest of the boys seem to be on track, unless there is a meltdown of some kind I see the score 27 - 10  Cowboys and a 2 game lead in the division.

# re: Don't Believe The Giant Hype

I say the boys still need to get Whitten MORE INVOLVED IN THE PASSING GAME. When he's catching passes the cowboys are winning. And he don't have a problem running over somebody after the catch. I also think that this game is NOT going to be that close. Romo is doing great the Offensive line is protecting the running backs are running great and Roy leads the league in intercetions. It's going to be a great day!!

Jason Cole, Yahoo! Sports November 30, 2006

The Chicago Bears may become the most disrespected top seed in the history of the NFL playoffs when the postseason begins on the first weekend in January.

Don't expect to read a different sentiment about that here.

The way the NFC playoffs shape up at this point, the Bears (9-2) will cruise to the top spot and home-field advantage. Over the final five weeks, the Bears don't play a team that currently has a winning record and the combined record of those teams is 19-36. The final three weeks are a parade of patsies with Tampa Bay (3-8), Detroit (2-9) and Green Bay (4-7).

This is not the type of schedule that's going to sharpen the turnover-prone Bears, who were guilty of four giveaways in their loss at New England last weekend. Only five turnovers by the Patriots kept the game close.

Looking ahead to the playoffs, the Bears have matchup problems against Dallas and New Orleans because both those teams have excellent wide receivers, allowing them to score quickly and put pressure on the Bears' offense. Furthermore, Dallas has a good enough defense to give quarterback Rex Grossman fits.

While the same can be said of the Bears' defense against Tony Romo, Dallas has better support around Romo. There's not a single starting skill-position player (quarterback, wide receiver, tight end or running back) who the Cowboys would trade straight-up with the Bears right now. Not even Terry Glenn for Bernard Berrian, although Berrian is a wonderful talent.

The same could probably be said for New Orleans, particularly once star rookie receiver Marques Colston returns from an ankle injury. About the only starting offensive skill player on the Bears who is clearly superior to his Saints counterpart is tight end Desmond Clark.

Is there an easy answer for the Bears? Not really. While critics raised the issue of benching Grossman after his latest bad outing, that's not a good idea. Veteran Brian Griese is a capable backup, but his weaknesses (holds the ball too long; bad pocket presence) will get exposed in a playoff atmosphere. Furthermore, Grossman is still the best long-term option for the Bears. It would be unwise to undermine his confidence at this point.

Assuming New Orleans can hold off Carolina in the NFC South, the key game in the NFC for the rest of the season will be Dec. 10. The Saints go to Dallas in a game that could decide the No. 2 seed in the NFC. In fact, the loser of that game might consider the No. 4 seed being a better option than the No. 3 seed because you wouldn't have a rematch until the NFC championship, if at all.

Of course, where does that leave NFC West leader Seattle in all of this? The Seahawks are a big wild card in this race because injuries have limited their stars until this week. Beyond that, the Seahawks have the toughest schedule down the stretch, including games at Denver this Sunday and against San Diego on Christmas Eve. The Seahawks will win their division, but probably will be the No. 4 seed. That's not good for a team that thrives on playing at home.

GIANT THOUGHTS
The New York Giants were noticeably absent from the above playoff look. The news this week of defensive end Michael Strahan criticizing wide receiver Plaxico Burress and then upbraiding a reporter who talked to Burress are the latest example of what's wrong.

The Giants are in chaos. The problem starts at the top. Many of the key players don't believe in coach Tom Coughlin right now.

"That's probably a pretty fair assessment," a member of the front office said. "Tom is a fine coach and he got our team under control [after former coach Jim Fassel was fired]. But I think the veterans have always sort of rolled their eyes at Tom and some of the stuff he does. Now, when they speak out and challenge him, there's not really a punishment. What's he going to do, bench guys he needs to play?"

Such was the case when Coughlin didn't really punish tight end Jeremy Shockey or running back Tiki Barber after they've second-guessed him at different times. Yes, Coughlin has called them in for meetings and, in particular, gotten on the very emotional Shockey.

But neither has ever really paid a high price. Meanwhile, both players continue to be treated well by the media. In particular, Barber has become a media maven. Never mind that he caused a major distraction when he announced that he was going to retire after the season. Conversely, when Coughlin coached in Jacksonville, he didn't have the type of high-profile veteran personalities he has in New York.

A large part of that is because Coughlin built the Jaguars from the ground up as an expansion team. He was able to establish and maintain a high level of respect, fear and control for a longer period of time. With the Giants, he hasn't been able to maintain it because the veterans know they can push back pretty hard.

Furthermore, Coughlin is only now getting on quarterback Eli Manning, even though Manning has been struggling for almost two months.

"You hear the frustration in Tom now, but I think some of the players were looking for that before," the executive said. "If he's going to get on Jeremy for speaking up or getting out of line, he should have gotten on Eli for not performing. Sometimes you give the quarterback a longer leash, but this may have been too long."

Does that mean that Coughlin is in trouble of losing his job? Not yet. The Giants are a pragmatic team when it comes to management. As bad as the loss to Tennessee was on Sunday, the team did have a 21-0 lead at halftime and easily could have iced the game if not for some odd mistakes. If rookie defensive end Mathias Kiwanuka gets the sack on fourth down when he had Vince Young wrapped up, the story would be different.

That said, if the team implodes further down the stretch and has a humiliating finish, the perception could change.

Add Dash of Strahan to Turmoil and Watch Giants Boil Over   By JOHN BRANCH

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J., Nov. 29 — It does not take much for the smoldering Giants to turn combustible — a couple of losses, a star running back criticizing the coaches, a fourth-quarter meltdown of historic proportions.

On Wednesday, just as the Giants began preparing for the biggest game of the season, along came an injured star player, carrying dynamite in his pockets.

Defensive end Michael Strahan, who had a chance to defuse an evolving he-said, he-said that Strahan started with receiver Plaxico Burress, instead turned the episode into the latest potentially divisive controversy for the Giants.

More than anything, it demonstrated just how low things can go for the Giants, losers of three games in a row, and how absurd things can get when a good team goes bad, particularly in New York, where the media coverage is larger and noisier than anywhere else.

Even Coach Tom Coughlin gave credence to the team’s latest fissure. He said that he knew about the comments that Strahan made on the radio Monday about Burress’s occasional lapses in effort.

“I was aware that a statement had been made, and what I’m trying to do right now, quite frankly, is pull everybody together and encourage,” said Coughlin, who over the past week has been reminding his players to keep complaints and criticisms in house. “I think it’s important that everyone take a stand, from the team standpoint.”

Minutes later, in the locker room, Burress said he was unaware of Strahan’s comments. Upon hearing some excerpts, he admitted that the words stung.

Strahan, realizing that the story was gaining momentum, walked into the locker room about 20 minutes later. Rather than clarify his comments, he lashed out, accusing reporters of trying to divide the team.

The Giants (6-5) are left trying to piece themselves together in time for Sunday’s home game against the division-leading Dallas Cowboys (7-4), winners of three games in a row.

To do so will require more than the usual game planning, or even duct tape and wire. Last week, after the Giants had lost consecutive games, running back Tiki Barber criticized the team’s play-calling, earning a curt response from Coughlin. On Sunday, the Giants became only the third team in N.F.L. history to blow a 21-point lead or larger in the final 10 minutes of a game, falling, 24-21, to the Tennessee Titans.

The latest loss came amid a riot of mistakes, including an intercepted pass from quarterback Eli Manning as Burress stopped running his route. Burress, for the second time in three games, appeared less than assertive in attempting the post-interception tackle.

Strahan has missed the past three games with a sprained foot, and did not travel with the team during its recent games against the Jacksonville Jaguars and the Titans. On Monday, he was asked by the WFAN talk-show host Joe Benigno about Burress.

“It’s a shame, because Plaxico is a great player and he’s a good guy to be around,” Strahan said. “But, at the same time, you’re judged by your actions out there on the field. And you can’t give up, you can’t quit, because you’re not quitting on yourself, you’re quitting on us, you’re quitting on everybody.”

He added: “He’s too great of a player to have people look at him and think: ‘Oh, he’s a quitter. He doesn’t finish. He doesn’t try hard.’ He’s too good of a player for that, because we all see what he does, what he can do.”

Coughlin, too, had been critical of Burress, and it seemed a relatively benign story line until an ESPN reporter, Kelly Naqi, asked to talk to Strahan on Wednesday about his Burress comments. Strahan told Naqi that he speaks to reporters only on Thursdays.

She then asked Burress for a response and highlighted a few of the more inflaming phrases Strahan had uttered.

“That is tough to hear someone say that about you,” Burress said. “You know me, I don’t get into the aspect of criticizing teammates. I have always stayed in my place. I have never called out anybody. I don’t call out names. I don’t get into that. If that is the way he feels, then I want to talk to him personally.”

Burress said it was the first he had heard of Strahan’s comments, and he had not spoken to Strahan.

Strahan entered the locker room about 20 minutes later, after Burress had gone, about five minutes before it closed to reporters, who stood several deep around his locker.

Strahan walked to the middle of the scrum. Naqi, near the back, asked whether he had spoken with Burress about his comments two days earlier.

Strahan angrily told her to come forward.

“Look a man in the eye before you try to kill him or make up something,” he said. “Look me in the eyes.”

She walked forward and repeated the question. Strahan went on a raised-voice diatribe.

“We’re 6-5; we’ve lost three games in a row,” Strahan said. “What do you want us to do? Put our heads down and go into a corner? We don’t do that. We’re men. We get back, we practice hard, we prepare for plays to win. We don’t prepare to come in to have someone who wants to take a comment and try to divide teammates in a way that it just disrupts this team, because we don’t have that division here. So if you want to come here with the negative, you’re coming to the wrong guy, because I’m not a negative guy. I don’t kill my teammates. I’m a man, and I talk to my teammates.”

He was gone in less than three minutes, declining to address his comments about Burress on the way out.

And in a season already soiled, but still salvageable, the Giants were left with another mess to clean.

END

Field position is going to be the key to victory through rain, sleet, snow, and whatever other element they are calling for.  Can you guys (and gals) imagine if Tyson Thompson wouldn't have gotten hurt??  He was quietly averaging 26 yards a return.  If it is windy on Sunday, I dont think their kicker can get the ball down past the 10.  If you add Tyson's average, that's an average starting position of our 36!!  Miles Austin is averaging I think 23 or 24 yards a return.  With Tony doing what he's been doing, I like our chances as far as taking advantage of field position........Dallas 22 NYG (New York Garbage) 9

# re: Don't Believe The Giant Hype

Look I know this will be a TOUGH game.  Its a division game on the road to a good team.  Yes the Giants are backed into a corner and will come out swingin.  But you know what, the Cowboys are a good team too and they will be countering those haymakers.  They know whats at stake here.  And I am sure with all the smack talk going on by the Giants.  Well, that just fuels the Cowboys fire.

Everyone keeps talking about Tiki Barber.  Well their other RB named Brandon Jacobs has me worried.  Especially in goal line and 2nd/3rd short situations.  The guy is huge, very hard to take down.  The defense needs to contain Barber and put the pressure on Eli, keeping Jacobs off the field.  If Jacobs is givin oppurtunities to keep drives going, the defense wont be able to stay fresh.  Unless the offense puts together some long sustained scoring drives of their own.  Which I think the offense will be able to do.  Especially to a Giants defense that is battered and bruised up.

Look the Giants didnt embarrass the Cowboys in the first meeting this season.  The Cowboys embarrassed themselves.  With all the turnovers, they were still in the game up until the last INT that went back for a TD to give the Giants a 14 point win.  With that being said, if the Cowboys can keep the turnovers to a minimum.  This game will have a very different outcome.  And I have to give the edge to the Cowboys, because they have positive momentum going into this game.  There are just too many distractions in NY for the Giants to be completely focused.

Oh yeah, the other thing that makes me nervous is the weather.  Anyone see that system in the Midwest moving NY's way.  Lets hope it doesnt make it to NY, so the weather doesnt play a huge factor in this game.

Lets be real folks. The Giants are a divisional opponent. To suggest this game should be a sure win is rediculous. I totally believe we could win this game but we have to prepare like it was a playoff game. In all actuality its true. This game could possibly decide the division champions as well as put da boys in an excellent position for a first round bye in the playoffs.(provided we continue to play at this level for the remaining schedule) The Giants know this to. They have the confidence that they can beat us and on top of that we are in their backyard. They have alot to prove right now. Beating us at this point in the season would not be only a big win for them, it would also silence some of their critics.

Here comes Sunday and we're New York bound, but this time its Tony as the QB hound. Got a rating over Manning thats should do the trick, gonna move in the pocket fire lazers that won't miss. O'Line is playing better gonna block and block. Jones and Barber will run out the clock. Get ready for a defense thats on a roll, gonna hit them in the mouth, get some sacks and score. Now the kicker is new, but he's done this before, got a Super Bowl ring, thats experience and more. The gameplan is ready, Boy's know what to do. Bring home a Win and take the NFC too.......... The injuries and most areas of play would have to favor Dallas this week.  However, the Giants have proven they match up well against Dallas especially over the last two seasons.  There is a reason why Houston always plays the Jags tough.  There is a reason why the Jags always play the Colts tough.  And there is a reason the Giants always play Dallas tough.  This reason is the matchups.  I just hope the NYG injuries hamper thier ability to match up well.

# re: Don't Believe The Giant Hype

The way I see it in the first game beween these two, the Giants were playing as well they can play and the Cowboys were just so so. Although the Giants eventually won the game by two TD's the game boiled down two or three plays either way or the Cowboys playing as mediorce as they were could have still won that game. Bledsoe's pic just before the half was huge. The Cowboys score there they most likely take a 14-12 lead to the half after being decidely outplayed. Then enter Romo obviously a little nervous throws a pic which leads directly to a Giants TD. Later in the game Cowboys the in the red zone Romo throws another pic that gets returned 90 yds for a TD after miscommunicating with a wide open Patrick Crayton.
Now that the Cowboys are playing much better and Romo is in complete control of this offense there's roughly 21 points in mistakes that aren't likely to happen again. The Giants in the first game with exception of couple deep throws didn't show that they can move the ball consistently against the Dallas D so for those reason the Cowboys win this week.

# re: Don't Believe The Giant Hype

Listen guys, the Cowboys made a lot of mistakes the last time they played the Giants. The biggest mistakes were the 3 interceptions by Tony Romo, especially that first one, which was his very first pass of the game (1-10 from the DAL-20). After that one pass giving the Giants a very short field and a 12 point lead, the Cowboys were playing from behind the rest of the game.

The Cowboys (especially Tony Romo) haven't made those same mistakes recently, and that's going to be the difference in this game. I don't know anyone that thinks the Giants could have beaten us last time, if it wasn't for all of our mistakes.

Like Parcells says, we played our best football of the season in November. Now if we can keep playing that kind of ball in December, nobody will beat us, not the Giants, not the Saints, not nobody.

I think the Cowboys are on a roll that is showing no signs of slowing down.  Granted, the Giants are playing at home and have SO much to prove, but Romo has already shown that he can do it all.  Fast scramble/pass, fling it sidearm, involve ALL the receivers.  Not to mention, he is having so much fun out there, his energy is contagious and makes me think of a young Brett Favre, while his smile is reminiscent of Ben Affleck, except Romo's not acting.  I love football as much for the personalities as for the game itself, and I think with all the barbs going back and forth between the Giants players are going to have a negative effect on their game.

Defiantly the 3 game loosing streak will have some effect in the way the Giants present themselves on Sunday.  I believe with injured players or not they have the power to convert their loosing streak when the Cowboys visit them in NY.  With Eli having the Manning genes, he can be "captain comeback" this Sunday with a weapon like Shockey who can duck under cover two and create miss matches.  The key to the Cowboys winning this one is having our LBs consistently putting pressure on manning and dropping into coverage at the right times.  I am sure that the Manning bros had quite the discussion at the dinner table this last holiday.  So don't be surprised if the boys have a rough one in NY.  Don’t get me wrong I am looking at the glass as half full. Our Boyz have gained some added confidence with Romo "Boy Wonder".  Who has changed the entire organization including the fans view of this team, I am one of them!  Right now we just need to keep playing with the same intensity until the season’s end, and THEN start thinking about the playoffs.

# re: Don't Believe The Giant Hype

Truthfully, we have a much better shot at winning this game than we did the last go around, and we're playing away this time. If we don't make a lot of mental errors and turnovers, we can win this game. The roles have reversed. The momentum is in our favor. We just need to do what it takes to keep it that way.

It's possible the crowd will be all over every Giant mishap. Romo will won't be coming onto the field with a deficit he didn't create this time. He has some real game experience with all the starters. The Giants defense is banged up enough, we have a lot of opportunities to run where we couldn't before. I think the passing game will be more effective because of this, not to mention I don't think NY can pressure us like they could when healthy.

There is a confidence on this Dallas team no one has seen for a very long time. It's real confidence born of talent, winning games (against some tough opponenets, no less) and buying into what Parcells is trying to do with this team. I don't know if all the fans know how to deal with this yet. Some may not realize what they're looking at. The Dallas Cowboys are a true contender. And we're healthy!

I think if Dallas can win this game, there is no reason they can't win the division and then move into the playoffs and maybe do something. I'm more upbeat about the possibilites with this team than I have been with any Dallas team since 1995. Our division is better than it's record. Both NY and Philly have some key injuries. I think our division is the best in the NFC. In decades past when this was the case, the Superbowl champion emerged from our division.

Are we due to have history repeat itself again? I think so.

# re: Don't Believe The Giant Hype

The Giants secondary even when healthy was suspect. Throw in not only the injuries to the secondary but to the D-line which should weaken the pass rush and I don't see how Romo if he continues to perform doesn't have another 300 yds plus game.

Kudos to the Web team for setting up this blog btw!

Game plan wise (Depending on weather) I hope we go to TO early in the first half and see if he can make take the crowd out of the game with a quick TD... I know our run game is good but I dont think their corners can keep up with our WRs and TEs.  If we keep barber in the backfield as a pass blocker we should be able to get up on them early... The other positive of passing early on is the Giants will likely commit a fair share of turnovers as there discipline will be lacking from all the emotional crap spewing from Coughlin... Start the 3rd qtr with a heavy dose of run and screen and wear em down... Manning is at his worst when playing from behind and not being able to utilize a running game.

Do you guys remember when Tiki got nailed by Roy a few years ago?  We need another one of those hits... I hate that self-righteous, arrogant, know it all wanna be Sirius commentator.  I agree with another post in that Brandon Jacobs is the bigger problem.  And Shockey, loud mouth, can't back it up, Cry baby... You will get yours as well... BRING OUT THE HORSE COLLAR!
Go Boys Break their freakin Necks and spill the blood... Then the real important game comes up... Revenge with the Eagles.
Dont care about the $Aints.. lucky streak against bad teams... they won't beat us at home. And vick... lol what else needs to be said.
We win here and its deep in the playoffs.  We don’t and its still deep in the playoffs.  Its not a must win game anyhow guys.

But now when we lie at our lowest and everybody is already crowning Dallas kings of the NFL, the energy is building in our locker room. The anger is funneling through every player at every practice who's just picturing how badly he wants this win. Romo is sitting back thinking he and Jessica are gonna be cuddling Sunday night in front of the fireplace and that he might be on the cover of the new S.I. If we balance our plays and don't turnover the ball we will win.

The Aints are a professional team and what they are trying to do is circle the wagons like any team would if they lost 3 in a row, and facing a divisional game. Our Boys can't listen to all that junk comming out of the NY media and just fix there eyes on the goal. Win a game. In the NFL if a tean with the Cowboys talent just concentrates and excutes its game plan they win. Unless the game plan is upside down and backwards, then you open up another soda pop or your beverage of choice and hang on to the couch. The Aints are not the problem we are.Play tuff play hard and hit them over and over don't stop hitting them till the game ends. The level of play must exceed the level of the team your playing.

# re: Don't Believe The Giant Hype but Believe in your Cowboys

This is it!!! Its been a long time to wait but Our beloved Dallas Cowboys are about to grab a strangle hold on the NFC East later on today. There is no doubt that the Giants canot cover the cowboys recievers and that Tony Romo is game to the task of getting them the ball. Eli Manning however is struggling while the Cowboys D is growing stronger. The only issue is making sure Tiki doesnt go off and I dont believe he will without there left tackle and with Eli Manning playing the way he is. By tomorrow evening the world will know which team has stepped up and become a super bowl contender and it will not be the New York football giants it will be Our Dallas Cowboys!!!

Hey there you Cowboy fans!! Congrats on your Teams win but I think you all must know that it had a lot more to do with Luck then anything else. Both Defenses were not stopping anyone. And the last one with the Ball won.  More the anything the lack of Giants Play calling!! 3 times inside the Dallas Cowboys 10 yard line and we only get 1 touchdown!!  Everyone knows you guys can't stop the run. You got lucky on on play with my big back Jacobs on 4th and 1. But If we had stuck to the game plan and ran the ball we would have worn your D out. YOu guys are quick but your light in the pants and you don't like to tackle my big Back. Which baffles me why we didn't run him up the gut like we always do. But enjoy your win. Look foward to seeing you in the playoffs. Would love to come to Dallas and Beat up on you again with my entire Defense in Tack!!
