Quick Hits - 1st Practice

Day 1, Afternoon Practice

  • The team worked in shorts and shells (no pads) for the first practice, so there was absolutely no contact.  They are expected to practice in pads tomorrow morning.
  • Pat McQuistan replaced Flozell Adams at left tackle.  Adams worked with the trainers as expected while recoving from offseason knee surgery.
  • Rookie free agent Jim Molinaro replaced Marc Columbo at right tackle.
  • Martin Gramatica and 6th round draft choice, Nick Folk, traded opportunities to kickoff.  Folk clearly had the stronger leg kicking within the 2 yardline 3 of 4 kicks.  Gramatica kicked no farther than the 4 yardline with 2 kicks at the 10 and 13 yardlines.
  • I would assume that we shouldn't read too much into this, but Tyson Thompson, Jamaica Rector, and .... Terrell Owens??? ... fielded kicks.  The obvious surprise is that Owens was back there.  A little less obvious was that last year's starting kickoff returner Miles Austin was not.  Remember, he was the guy that returned a kickoff for a touchdown in the last game the Cowboys played (playoffs in Seattle).
  • Greg Ellis missed portions of the 7-on-7 drills while standing on the sideline with shoe in hand.  During his press conference, Wade Phillips explained that they expected Ellis to experience pain.  Phillips doesn't think he's reinjured the Achilles and is optimistic that he will practice tomorrow morning.
  • Free agent cornerback Joey Thomas made a couple of nice plays at cornerback.  On one play, he showed his speed while running alongside Terry Glenn on a fly route keeping good position to force the incompletion.  Let's keep an eye on this young guy.
  • Terrell Owens ended the 7-on-7 drill with a long touchdown pass from Romo as he speed burst past the falling Anthony Henry.

TO returning kicks?

No Miles Austin? I feel in love with guy as the season ended.

Maybe Austin is going to be used in a role more suited for his abilities.

# re: Quick Hits - 1st Practice

Well, I think it's good for McQuistan and Molinaro to get some much needed reps in practice, because they more than likely will be called on to play at some point in the season.

But T.O. fielding kicks? Wow, that's a shocker. Owens looks to be major force in this offense, but I never thought he'd be used on special teams. If he is though, I expect that to give opposing coverage units anxiety attacks.

I don't think Grammatica can beat out Folk on kickoffs, but I also don't think Folk can beat out Grammatica on field goals. So I anticipate Dallas will keep both of them on the roster.

This training camp sounds as if it is too much glitz and circus acts with all the music and media kinda like the ol lets practice twice a day and hit someone now style.

T.O. returning kicks?  Wow!  Exciting...but I don't know if I would put him out there in that capacity and risk injury.

I just excited that the season is here, and that we put on some pads tomorrow..." Let the Run Begin"..." Lets Go Cowboys"!!!

# re: Quick Hits - 1st Practice

Glad to hear they got one practice in without the pads.  Hopefully, they'll be wearing pads & going full speed tomorrow morning.  I took off work tomorrow so that I can take the family to the Alamodome to see them practicing - a new experience for all of us.  We're ALL excited about being there, even if we just get to see them run thru some drills.  Good stuff, Rob!  Keep it up.

No full speed until the end of the week, or at least I wouldn't think so.  Got to learn to walk before you run.

# re: Quick Hits - 1st Practice

man! i know this is a man's game and TO is a man's man, but man, let another man man those kick returns....

we can't afford to lose THE 25 million dollar man for some expensive thrills on kick returns.

ask yourself: is it worth it to  "possibly" get good field position and possibly lose your main man at the same time??

man, i don't think so....!

# re: Quick Hits - 1st Practice

You're right, cnnnn. But at the same time, any player can get injured on any play. I certainly wouldn't want to see the one player the offense is geared toward lost on a kick return. But I wouldn't want to see him taken out on a pass reception either.

yeah, and i remember having the same concerns when primetime was out there returning kicks. but never once did i complain when he would run them back for a fresh td!

although as the bigdog once said: "cnn, you worry too much!"

he was right!

go cowboys!

# re: Quick Hits - 1st Practice

Yes, a player can get injured on any play. However, so keeping your best players on the field is always a viable option.

and

If you do not have a quality Punt or Kick returner then would of your play makers maybe the best option.

However, with the Cowboys I do not see the need to have Newman, or TO, or Glenn...returning punts if it is not necessary.

Because as a matter of statistics the more plays you run or involved the greater chance of injury.

The Law of Averages will catch up eventually no matter who you are.

Since we have Austin, and Tyson healthy why but one of your starters at risk.

Since the percentage of getting a TD on a punt and kickoff are low, and the net gain would probably be less than 10 yards with a great player or a good player.

It does not seem to me to be worth that risk

I like seeing McQ at LT, and we need to get (THE QB-dis)Spencer into camp.

# re: Quick Hits - 1st Practice

I hope we sign spencer very soon.  He definitely needs to get used to our defense, especially now that ellis may not be entirely healthy.  Is spencer's agent asking for a lot?  What seems to be the problem?

# re: Quick Hits - 1st Practice

Haven't heard what the exact issue is. Other than not many of the other top guys have signed, so it delays the rest.

# re: Quick Hits - 1st Practice

I think Ellis is done. Spencer needs to get in soon. Maybe they should give Carp a shot at OLB again too.

# re: Quick Hits - 1st Practice

rich, if Ellis is really down for the count, or even an extended period of time, that is a great idea.

Thursday, July 26, 2007 9:20 AM by Coach

# re: Quick Hits - 1st Practice

You would think that at the very least they would make Carp the starter until Spencer comes around and if Ellis ever gets healthy enough, use him as a situational pass rusher. I think that may be all he's good for now.

# re: Quick Hits - 1st Practice

I being an avid fan, think Anthony Fasono should try out for fullback because he has better hands than Hoyte or Polite. What do u think?

Thursday, July 26, 2007 9:35 AM by Dallascowboy28

# re: Quick Hits - 1st Practice

It depends on what they want out of Carp. If they see him as pushing the starters at ILB, and potentially becoming one of the starters then maybe not. But I think between him and Burnett one should be able to fill in at the OLB position if it comes down to it. For now though seeing what those other guys can do is a good thing.

# re: Quick Hits - 1st Practice

I don't think it matters. They drafted a true fullback in Deon Anderson so he has the inside track to win the job anyway. The one area where Dallas lacks depth is behind Witten at TE. Fasano is good where is....

Thursday, July 26, 2007 9:43 AM by richman

# re: Quick Hits - 1st Practice

The FB should be Anderson by the start of the season. Fasano needs to be the #2 TE. We are probably only going to carry 3 TEs.

# re: Quick Hits - 1st Practice

I'm wondering which one or two of the FA's in camp will make the the team, and,at who's expense. Colombo and Flo need to bet in as fast as they physically can.And if Ellis can't play,PUP him quick.

The article made it sound like Stanback was going to be out on the non-sports related PUP for the first 6 games.

Ellis is fine. It's always normal, when recovering from any kind of tear, to feel pain. He has to break through the scar tissue to get the flexibility back in the tendon.

i will be watching anderson closely. been some time now since the boys had a bruising fullback that can catch and block

is this the year all the pieces start coming together?

ye gods! i hope so...

Does anyone know if the practices at Valley Ranch are open to the public after they break camp in San Antonio and before the regular season?

# re: Quick Hits - 1st Practice

I almost feel sick.

I remember an onteresting story earlier this year, when T.O. showed up for a practice he did not have to attend, and finished the day by catching a bomb from Romo after blowing past T. Newman.

This story includes T.O. blowing past Anthony Henry.

Am I the only Cowboy fan who is Extremely Tired of seeing Newman and Anthony on their backs with their feet in the air while receivers dance in the end zone?
