Spencer Signs $9 Million Deal

Cowboys first round pick, Anthony Spencer, signed a 5-year, $9 million contract today.  The deal includes $6 million worth of gauranteed money.

He is expected to play outside linebacker opposite Demarcus Ware.  With starting strongside linebacker Greg Ellis missing practice with a sore Achilles, Spencer should work with the first team.  Although he is not currently in San Antonio, Cowboys officials are optimistic that he will be at practice this afternoon.

OT James Marten has still not agreed on a deal and remains the sole holdout.

Thanks for this news Derek... i know coach phillips was spinning the greg ellis 'pain' as being expected, but what is really expected is that most people dont recover from a torn achilles in less then a year.

We need this kid to be who Denny Green thought he was.

Great nickname for Spencer there Coach,

Anthony 'QB-DIS'Spencer on one side Demarcus 'BE'Ware on the other side, spells DOOM for apposing Quarterbacks this year and years to come.

Glad to hear that Spencer is signed, now get him into practice this afternoon and lookout.

10:17 -- Summary of the 10 first-team snaps: Julius Jones had nice gains on all three of his carries. Barber had two carries for about a yard apiece -- one ended with Bradie James knocking off his helmet. Romo scrambled twice, one of which would have probably been a sack. He was 0-of-3 passing.

Cool.  Now we need to sign Marten and get this show on the road.  Offense is always behind the defense at this point.  They need lots of reps.

I hope Ellis is OK but I have my doubts despite what Coach Phillips calls the "expert" opinions.  If Ellis is truly OK having Spencer (and others) in camp will be a real motivation.

Anthony Spencer is the hybrid player that this defense was missing.  I'm glad they got him signed and that he'll be in camp. Coach Philips will know exactly how to maximize his talents.

That will make two Boilermakers starting for America's Team

"...He is expected to play outside linebacker opposite Demarcus Ware.  With starting strongside linebacker Greg Ellis missing practice with a sore Achilles.."

derek, mick is makin' it sound a lot more scary than just "a sore achilles" dude.

i'm wondering if greg is toast

of course, 9 games into the season i wanna' look back on my post and be embarrassed about having a case of cnnworryitus, but it's not looking good for ellis

maybe trading back up into the first to grab spencer was a shrewd move after all by uncle jerry

and we still have two #1 picks next season!

new stadium, sold out season (i can't buy ONE  cowboys ticket), superbowl selection granted to the new stadium, is jerry on a roll or what?

9:58 -- We're getting our first taste of 11-on-11. Julius Jones rips off a 9-yard gain on the first play, paying for it by taking a big hit from Roy Williams.

10:01 -- Bradie James just knocked Marion Barber's helmet off with a big hit on the sideline on a 1-yard run. DE Chris Canty blew up the play by knocking OG Kyle Kosier a few yards deep, making Barber bounce further outside than he wanted.

------------

sounds like there's some hitting going on in practice today....i love it.

why dont the rookies stay in town...even when negotiating contracts....now we have to wait for Spencer to fly in...with bad weather.....

do they plan on not coming in for a while?

im sure money can be an issue as far as paying to fly in...but how bad do you want to play?  you can find the money...its not like he wouldnt be getting a few million soon anyway....or his stinkin agent can spot him the funds since he's in town negotiating....

Would've been shocked to see Spencer out for any longer. The team needs this guy big time because I don't think it's realistic that a 31 year old player coming off a torn achilles is going to be much help. Expectations for Ellis should be guarded at the VERY best. Is there a precedent for a defensive player coming off this type of injury and having a good year? If there is, please let me know!!!

well, if there is a precedent, it would have to be in recent history because it used to be that when you had this particular injury you were done.

now with modern techniques, like water conditioning and such it's now possible. but i don't think 31 is that old to come back from something like that. the key is time. there have been athletes who rushed their recovery and did perm damage...

btw bengone, is c & ping a no no on a fast moving blog?

"...Phillips says he's glad to have old guys like Lacewell around, since an extra educated voice can only help.

"He's a football guy that observes things just like my dad," said Phillips, whose father Bum has attended the first practices of camp..."

no disrespect coach phillips, but bum phillips is STILL alive???  he was old when i was watching pittsburg and houston beat the snot out of each other in the 70's

ye gods!

anyway, i want to see marten out there too now that he's signed.  he seems to be a smart player and the fact that he attended brebeuf only enhances that notion.

nice to see the boys have some bright players on staff...

# re: Spencer Signs $9 Million Deal

Commenting on a question posted above, I think the reason players aren't "in town" a lot of times waiting for their contracts is because they are instructed not to be.  The agents don't want their clients to look like they're too eager to get on the field.  They want ownership to feel that the client is willing to wait as long as it takes to get the money they are after.  You know, kind of like when girls hold out on giving it up for a few dates, and they want to appear that they aren't "too easy".

Also, commenting on how players recover on achilles injuries, I want to say it typically take a year and a half to two years for a full recovery (physically and mentally).  Some never recover.  Remember a few years ago when we took a flier on Westbrook (name may be wrong) at the corner spot?  He was trying to come back from the same injury and he was promptly torched by David Carr in that inexcusable loss to the Texans on their inaugural game.

Spencer looks like the long time replacement for Greg Ellis but now he needs some pre-season games to gain the expertise to take it to the next level.

SO far so good.   Spencer has adjusted well to this defense and though 4 games has not made any mistakes.
