I'm actually going to "listen" to the one true person in this matter, and that's Roy Williams himself.  It was mentioned that in locker room conversation yesterday, when the players we in for their exit interviews, Mr. Roy Williams himself admitted to playing poorly this year and will work on all the things he and the team/coaches know he needs to improve on.  He understood he didn't perform to his expectation of a top-10 player and promised that next year he will resemble the same player he was when he came out of college...

I guess we will have no choice but to wait and see what goes on in next year's training camp.

Oh, and if you're wondering, the source of this information came from Rob Philips, and was commented on and confirmed during Derek Eagleton and Nick Eatman's radio show.

If you guys want to believe that Roy's teammates secretly hate him, and just talk about how "important" he is to the team, and how much they "need" him, or rely on him out there because they are being "PC", that's your business.

If you guys want to believe that his teammates don't really think that his 92 tackles in 15 games, 73 solo, were "meaningful", or "contributed" to the team this season, once again that's your business.

If you guys want to believe that Roy's coaches just talk about how important he is to the secondary, and continue start him just because they don't want to hurt his feelings, or because he gets paid a lot of money, that's your business.

If you guys want to believe that Ant Henry, or Greg Ellis, or Ken Hamlin lay ANY of the blame from the Amani Toomer TD reception in Sunday's game at Roy's feet, feel free to do so.

I know better, and I'll leave it at that.

If he did that, i think it is a good step.  I'm used to him denying it, pointing to other guys on the field, saying the media and fans didn't understand, ect.  Maybe now that he admits it he can actually work to improve.

I'm not saying that that is the case.  I'm just saying there is no way to tell if the players have doubts about his ability or not.

There we go.  Straight from the horses mouth.  'Nuff said.  Oh, boy....?  Do we trust him?  Do we believe him?  Did it take several years of bad play for him to finally notice this?  Should we give him another year, and if so, at the SS position (starting)?  What if he fails us again?  What if he improves?  Hmmmm....

If he is willing to work his ass of to get back into form, there is no other real option.  He has the ability to be a game changing player.  He just needs to play to that ability.

The better Roy plays, the happier we'll all be, but I would HOPE that we could at least agree that there is a BIG difference between "not meeting (fan)expectations" and playing "poorly"?

When Roy came out he set the bar extremely high, in that sense he has very much become a victim of his own (early) success!

When it comes to living up to the "expectations" of some of the people here, he will simply NEVER be able to do it, even if he managed to turn in the BEST season of all TIME by a DB!

I would not say that Roy neccessarily played at a high enough level to "meet my expectations", but he certainly did NOT play "poorly" this season as a whole, especially when compared to the last couple seasons he had under Parcells!

He had a few bad games, but also had probably his third best season overall, out of six so far!!

oh poor roy williams he has to play up to a contract that pays him as a top safety. oh poor roy williams just because he has had a big dropoff in level of play for no apparent reason. oh poor roy williams just because he has played mediocre we shouldnt criticize him. oh poor qb09281 for being so delusional

yeah i hated when he thought that he was never to blame and such. i guess this is a good step in the right direction. ok qb roy admitted he was bad this year now admit the same and we will leave you alone.  roy manned up and admitted he was bad now its time to man up that you were wrong fro defending his play this year

Just so we're clear here.  I will NEVER, EVER agree with you that Roy "failed to contribute to this team at all this year", I will NEVER, EVER agree with you that he was a "liability" for our defense, or the he made "countless mistakes" this season, or that he was "mediocre" or that he was a below average DB this season!    I will not agree with you because ALL of those statements are flat out wrong!

The only thing I will "admit" is that I have wasted a tremendous amount of time arguing against your perceptions and unfounded assertions by using actual facts, and statistics over the last few weeks!!

I will certainly commend Roy for admitting that there are things that he needs to work on, and I certainly hope that he is able to improve on his already considerably above average SS play!!!   I also commend him for taking more of the blame for some of the problems of our secondary than was his fair share, and for being a "team" guy in general!

edit:does anyone think that having 3 different coaches, and 3 very different schemes to learn in his 6 seasons might have contributed to Roy's slight decline in on the field performance?   Hopefully by this time next year, Wade will have had a chance to really, fully install his defensive scheme, and that we've brought in a few supporting players to help him better execute his scheme!

That might be part of it.  Some players adjust to that sort of thing better than others.

I too can easily understand how playing up to fan's/media expectations are just sometimes unrealistic...  that has a lot to do with why Roy is the way he is with the media!  While I too was somewhat shocked to hear comments about Roy saying his level of play was not where it should of been, it's my opinion that he probably meant that he was not producing to the level in which Jerry drafted him for and he is going to work to get back to that production level...  maybe kinda' taking a cue from TO and understanding what kind of role he is "suppose" to play since he does have certain expectations that others do not.
