I wanted Manny Lawson because I knew we were taking a LB but I was hoping we would land Meriweather..........I hated the Fasano pick too
Carpenter set the bar so low it was hard for Spencer to look bad......Spencer seems like he has a bright future.
Meriweather was last year....Lawson was the year before

Yeah I wanted Meriweather and Nelson too....I like Spencer, but had we taken Lawson the previous year, Meriweather and Nelson could have been a real possibility

Re: In Hindsight, we should have drafted....
CaymanCowboy:It's too easy, isn't it?. Simply roll back the clock to 2002 and point out that Ed Reed was drafted in the '20's while Roy Williams was a top ten. Never mind that most were ecstatic to get Roy on that faithful day in April, and most now agree that Roy sucks. Someone must be blamed for the mistake, right? There have been many other questionable moves since then, and we all know who they are. So, I have a challenge for you guys if you're willing to accept. Tell me who the Cowboy's should have picked in any given year and why. In fairness to our front office; be specific, and be honest. No "anybody but so and so". Give me a name, a reason for the selection, and where the Cowboy's would be today if Jerry only listened to you. Finally, admit if your guy is a stud, or dud. I'll start with the 2007 draft and my choice: Robert Meachem. I wanted a receiver then because I knew we'd be in trouble in '08 if we didn't draft one. Knowing that it takes a year for a WR to develope, and knowing a couple of good prospects (Dwayne Bowie and the speedy Meachem) should be available at #22, it was a no-brainer. I literally jumped for joy when we made the Quin trade, but I was equally excited when we traded back into the 1st with Meachem still on board. I just knew I'd hear his named called next, and was quite disappointed when we took Spencer. So here we are a year later and it turns out that Spencer made a much bigger contribution that I'd anticipated. Meanwhile, my boy Robert hurt his knee in rookie camp requiring arthroscopic surgery and subsequently sat out the entire season. While the jury's still out on Mecheam's return, I certainly wouldn't give a first round pick for him now. Cayman's 2007 pick: Dud.
Please speak for yourself . Some people don't think Roy sucks as bad as you do. I'm a little sick of the Roy bashing when there is plenty of blame to spread around .The name Aaron Glenn ring a bell on a few plays? How about the highly touted Terrance Newman? Shouldn't he stop every pass play? Why do you expect Roy to? Anthony Henry? Bradie James? Talk about a guy that can't cover. What about the pass rush? Don't count me as one of those "we" your talking about. I appreciate the plays Roy has made that have helped us win games. Don't forget he lost the coach that drafted him and had to change defenses shortly after the start of his career.
We have the depth
We have the talent
We have the coach
We have more experience
I do expect us to have one of the best defenses ever, even for a team that's had the label doomsday defense for some time now.

Re: In Hindsight, we should have drafted....
I, too, had my heart set on Meacham. Also had my sights set on Aundrae Allison, a speedy WR taken in the 5th round. He is an unknown quantity at this point, taken in the 5th round by Minn. Also had Jordan Kent, WR, and Jacoby Jones, WR picked out. Jacoby went in the 3rd round to Hous. and has turned into a real stud. Jordan Kent was taken in the 6th round by Sea. and spent the whole year on the practice squad. Since he is 6-4, 210 and runs a 4.49, it seems surprising we didn't nab him at some point during the season w/ our shortage of quality WR's.
Misses: Clowney, VT, 4.32, WR - 6-1, 184. GB, 5th round, cut in training camp.
Chansi Stuckey, Clem., 4.42, WR - 5-10, 193. 7th round, NYJ. Spent season on IR.
Paul Williams, Frsno St., 4.45, WR - 6-1, 200. 3rd round, Tenn. Didn't play much, Titans still high on him.
Yes, I was obsessed w/ taking a WR. We still need to. Maybe StanB is it. Better hedge our bets and get some more talent in the WR dept. Ditto, CB.
OK, Ellis is a bit above average.

Re: In Hindsight, we should have drafted....
In 2004, I was standing in the living room, waiting for Minnesota and New England to pick....both could easily have taken Steven Jackson, and if they didn't, there was definitely a team behind us that could trade up, KNOWING the Cowboys would take Jackson if he was still available. Then, when they didn't, I couldn't wait for the pick to be made....When Tagliube walked up, and announced a trade, even the 1st rounder next season wasn't consolation.
Move forward, Jones is gone, and we are again looking for another running back. Compare the two over the years.....
Jackson 57 games played, 4249 yards and 30 TD's
Jones 53 games played, 3484 yards and 18 TD's
Now, here is the caveat.....had we selected Jackson and Barber....we wouldn't be looking for a running back right now, unless we got a 1st round compensation offer (we wouldn't have tendered a 1st and 3rd). So, we would have gotten that extra first rounder anyways (probably) and had a better back to boot.
Don't get me wrong....I love Barber....but it would have worked out so much better the other way. Oh, and we could have gotten Anthony Odom with our 2nd round pick, instead of Jacob Rogers. Odom, who has 12.5 career sacks, compared to Spears, who has 4.5.
S.Fla 2004 pick....winner.

Re: In Hindsight, we should have drafted....
I was kind of hoping last year we drafted Brady Quinn but after seeing him hold out for top 10 money yet was picked at the 20 spot, and seeing how he hasn't done much since his induction into the NFL, I'm glad we passed him up.
New season, new players, new result!

Don't forget he lost the coach that drafted him and had to change defenses shortly after the start of his career. Poor argument. Aaron Glenn isn't with the Cowboys any more and was a good nickel corner anyways. Terence Newman didn't let in a touchdown for over 2 years and last year was hobbled almost all year with Plantar Fascia. Henry in't known as a great cover-corner, he's a hard-hitting ballhawk, kind of what Roy is supposed to be, and he proved that with his six picks in the first few games last year. Bradie James is a run-stopping linebacker and is damn good at his job. You might as well complain that Chris Canty can't cover. Roy was highly touted as a hard-hitting safety who made big plays. Ever since Woodson retired, he hasn't exactly set the world on fire with his decrease in hard hits and big plays and increase in botched coverage and missed tackles. THAT is why people bash him more often nowadays. In other words, he's proven that without an exceptional safety as his OWN safety net, he can't make plays. Thank goodness Ken Hamlin's here. On topic - I was upset and confused when we took Spencer. We didn't need another Linebacker! Carpenter can't exactly make plays if he doesn't play and was coming along nicely last year. However, when Ellis went down and Spencer replaced him and he injured Eli Manning, he immediately won me over >=]

Re: In Hindsight, we should have drafted....
I too was a guy who was high on Ginn and Meachem. I could not believe we drafted another guy to play LB. I absolutely flipped. But Spencer was pretty solid and showed some flashes of good potential. Meanwhile, Meachem showed nothing and really didnt play. Ginn played but is so raw at WR that it will prob take another year or two before he can be a starting WR. Not only that, but Ginn's speed really didnt look impressive in from what i saw. We all know he can run fast and i dont know if it was the injury or what, but his speed just didnt seem to translate well to the NFL last year.
I woud also like to add the 1998 draft. The one that every team passed on a kid named Randy Moss because of character issues. Well I for one think Ellis was not only the right pick because of the off field issues with the team but also in the long term. We have gotten a very solid pass rusher for the last ten years who has been high character and the upmost team guy. i know his whining in the offseason gets annoying and it is going to come back around again this year guys so go ahead and propare yourselves. But though that is annoying, he has had no serious off field or on field character issues, he has been healthy for the most part his whole career until the ACL and has successfully recovered from that, has been productive, a team player, was/is inexpensive quality pass rusher, and a good teammate. Compare that to Moss, who is a spectacular player, had character issues (taking plays off, mooning crowd, blowing up on sidelines) on field and with media, was greedy for a big payday even though he had to go to the worst team in the NFL, and was known to be a lazy worker in the offseason. Now alot of that changed this last year with Moss, but if we picked him back in 1998 and assume we still went through that revolving quarter back phase in the early 2000s, then he would have left anyways prob. So we wouldnt have gotten 10 years out of him i dont think. I think with the way him and TO were wired back in there early days, i dont think any team could have been capable of keeping them their whole careers. I know we might have gotten another superbowl with Moss but fact is, once the triplets got old and left, he would have been the only talent left on the team, much like in Minn a few years back. So i might get bashed for saying Ellis was a better pick than Moss, but hopefully some of you see my point here and that ill take quality player on and off the field for 10-12 years for relatively cheap compared to a spectacular, really expensive questionable character guy for only 4-5 years. Of course thats with my GM hat on, but the fan in me really would have liked to see Irvin paired with Moss haha

If you looked at Spencer's combine numbers, you would have seen that he's a got a LOT of potential. In no way was that pick wasted. He has the potential to become a perennial pro-bowl LB under Wade, not as good as Ware, but then again who is.

Re: In Hindsight, we should have drafted....
Taking Carp one pick ahead of Cromartie really hurt in 06. At the time we were in no need for another LB. Corner was not a pressing need like this year but it was still a need then and we missed on it. Cromartie sure would have been a nice help this year when both our corners were hurt at different times.

Anybody other than Dwayne Goodrich. I can't remember a more wasted pick in recent history.
