Re: 2008 NFL Draft Recap:
jcowboy:
So my grade for the cowboys' 08' draft goes as follows...I love the first two pics(A),not sure if i agree on the way they were aquired though.Confused, but curious to watch on our new TE sets will look(B-)...Selection of another RB is a bonus in my book(B);always need two solid and a back-up incase of injuries.Don't know much about the other DB...but love attempting to stack a weak area(B)...and maybe turning into the strength of our D....The absence of a WR pick is curious to say the least(C-)...But as a loyal to the bone fan i must ride with Jerry and assume Dallas or Jerry himself has seen signifigant progess to be able to entertain all of his moves...Also like to note for the record on why we drafted a DE(D)...a little confused? So over all my draft grade will be a (B-)...I am recanting my previous C in other posts.Got some extra picks for next year...hope they pan out better!
Us picking up a TE and DE(who will probly be a LB by the start of the year)didnt suprise me since we traded miami ayodele and fasano...i dont understand that move...but i think the TE maybe better that fasano....i think that Felix was a good draft for us and am suprised he was still there after the one big named rbs coming out had surgery i thaought Felix would be higher on everyones list..then we got to choose from Felix or mendenhal...the cbs we drafted was good.. Jenkins was one of the best and the other we drafted was very good value.and hey we even got another rb for backup and who knows he may wind up bein better than Felix.....i cant wait to find out....B grade

Re: 2008 NFL Draft Recap:
I give our draft a solid B. Good stuff. We picked up a RB that we needed big time. I don't get why everyone is upset with the Mendenhall non-selection. The way I see it, Mendenhall is a 1300-1400 yard back. Nothing more or less. I like the idea of Felix, think about it, Marion bruises up opposing D's, gouges them for 15-20 carries. Beats on them, tears them up, wears them out. Then you bring in a fresh Jones with homerun power. He will shread D's late in the game. Then we get a good CB, and I hear he is a great guy, a real good guy, the exact oppostie of Pacman. Our Secondary went from one of the worst in the NFL to possibly the best in just a few short days. And for those of you worried about an injury to Barber, we got a good underrated back from Georgia Tech, this draft went very well. We then drafted the best TE in the draft. I don't know why we even traded Fasano? But either way, we have good TE's. We added more depth at CB, and Kiper had the CB we took in the fifth, going in the 2nd RD. Pretty good drafting here. I'm not sure about the DE we took. Probably just depth. So, a B from me. I am more then optimistic about Miles Austin and Stanbeck, even though everyone here seems to hate Austin.

Re: 2008 NFL Draft Recap:
I was pleased that the cowboys got Felix Jones---I know Mendenhall was right behind him, but with the choice of a 1-back system or a 2-back system I like the options and Felix fits this system. I also see that they can line him up outside at WR or slot or just move him into the flat since he has great hands--anyone that can catch and do kick-returns the way he does is a tough kid and seems willing to do whatever he is asked...a football guy and that is what this team needs. I do not know much about Mike Jenkins, since they could not pull off a trade for a vet WR I was happy that they went CB here. Like I said I do not know much about him but with what has been said since the pick, it seems like he is a good choice, once again he is a kick-return guy as well and definitely has speed. I doubt there is another team out there that with their first two picks their guys average speed is faster than these two (4.40 average). COOL!

Re: 2008 NFL Draft Recap:
I am very happy with our draft picks. I give it a B. We got a good running back who also can catch the ball plus run back kicks. An excellent corner who will step in a couple of years from now and be a soild stater. TE whom i don"t know much about, but have read can catch the ball. as for the other picks i guess we"ll see. As for wide-out I like what we got in house, plus we got a 3rd and 4th next year.

I actually like Austin he had some really good kickoff returns last year and pretty good hands...Sam Hurd made some great catches last year..there wasnt alot of quality at wr in the draft this year...i think next year when we pick 32nd (cause we won the superbowl) that we will address safety and wr.

Re: 2008 NFL Draft Recap:
I would give it a B, because we didn't get a WR, but we don't NEED 1. We can address that issue next season for now we're better than last season. Added two good corners, and I think one of the two will straighten up to help become a championship team. Keep Newman and let Henry go next season if everything works out or leave Henry on for another season, cause we got developing corners a rookie and Alan Ball.Better running back combo after the draft, and better corners. I was hoping to get that Miami saftey though. Damn Giants got him. The tight end seamed like a good move, but I was hoping to move up and get a WR with a few picks. Good draft overall.

Re: 2008 NFL Draft Recap:
Ithink that it was a good draft and we addresses some positions needs(RB,CB) that were in need of addressing. I don't think letting Akin and Fasano go for a fourth round pick was a good idea and also taking a TE when we did is also bothering me. Fasano was pretty good in the role he was playing so why let him go for an unproven rookie. All in all I give them a C would have been a B if they would have gotten a safety .

Re: 2008 NFL Draft Recap:
I agree, I do miss the old Roy but I think Jerry is sending a clear message to Roy. Either put up, or shut up. If he's been whining in Wade's ear or Jerry's ear about how the CB isn't covering his man then now is the time to prove himself right. There is no excuse. We have possible 3 Pro Bowl Caliber CB's in Henry, Newman, and Pacman 1 potential pro-bowler in Mike Jenkins and 1 potential starter in Scandrick, all with enough speed to cover any WR in the league. Not to mention Jerry is slow cookin Alan Ball and Pat Watkins to possible take over Roy's position. Also with 5 Pretty good CB's I wouldn't be surprised to see Anthony Henry roll over to Safety in Passing situations. Roy was a great safety but if he doesn't start making plays that are as big as his contract Jerry will have to wave bye-bye to Roy when he's on the plane to Free Agency.

I couldn't agree more. This a put up or shut up season for Roy. He will have no excuses and no place to hide. I hope his game comes back and he plays like he did BUT if not, he needs to go.

Strengths: Has very good size and bulk with long arms...A great athlete...Good timed speed and acceleration with a burst to close...Physical...Natural cover skills...Is versatile with experience at both corner and safety..Smooth with fluid hips and nice change of direction...Breaks on the ball quickly...Also offers some special teams potential.
Weaknesses: Is not great in run support...Not overly instinctive...Pretty inconsistent...Has some character questions...Footwork and technique are shaky...Lacks superb ball skills and awareness...Toughness may be an issue...Might be a bit of a CB / S 'tweener.
Notes: Was born in Germany...Combined with teammate Trae Williams to form one of the best corner duos in the nation...Also played safety early in his career...Suspended after being arrested and charged with misdemeanor counts of disorderly conduct and obstructing or opposing an officer without violence in March of '07...Has a ton of starting experience and everything you look for physically in a pro corner...Very good prospect who has the talent to be a starter...Could get slightly overdrafted

Absolutly correct...Roy never could cover even back in his younger years...we just had good corners and he could roam and attack..this year we should be set at cb so no more excuses..i wanna see him kill someone every game, cause if he dont he better retire....JJ wont keep him around..but actually i think he will play alot better this year with him not having to cover so much, it will probly take a few games for the defensive cordinator to start trusting the cbs in 1 on 1 coverage..and if we get a good pass rush then the whole secondary will look like pro bowlers...

I'm glad everyone hates Roy Willaims, and loves to blame him for our Safety problem. Roy Willaims was never brought in to be a cover safety. He is supposed to roam free and make plays. When we actually had a good Secondary, and a good COVER SAFETY in Darren Woodson, Roy was lights out. He would roam, make HUGE hits, pick off passes, and was an all out force. Now, it appears our Secondary will be good, and Hamlin seems to do well in our system, we will see this year if he was just a one year wonder looking for huge money, or if he is legit. I think you will see the Roy of old, making plays, picking of passes, and nailing people. I am so excited about the Secondary this year, what was one of the worst in the NFL, may now be the best in the NFL. One more thing, our Special Teams returns may very well be the best in the NFL also. Felix Jones is a monster on returns, and so is Pacman on punt returns. We did so many things to get better this draft, we are going to put some points on the board, and stop some people on D. I really think we have a very good chance to win the Super Bowl.

Re: 2008 NFL Draft Recap:
I give the draft a B+. We drafted really good in the first round with Felix (RB) Jones and Mike (CB) Jenkins. We have 4 really good CB's and another rookie who I think will be playing in the nickle by the end of the year. We only had 2 CB's about a week ago. That's a huge upgrade. Also, time for Roy to return to old form or he may be watching games from the bench.
Felix is going to be a great addition. Marion's pound'em, push,em get out of my way running style coupled with Felix's here I am, oops you missed me, try again, oops you missed me again style is going to freak out OC around the league. What do you do?? Which poison do you want first?
I was just a bit surprised we traded Ayodelle and Fasano to Miami. I was reading the information on the kid from Texas A&M. One thing that hit me while I was reading was his excellent blocking skills. If the boys intend to become better balanced in 2008 they will need a good blocking TE to help the O-line. This might be the reasoning here. As for Akin, I think Jerry and the rest of the staff felt it was time to let Bobby Carpenter show his talent. Bobby can learn a lot from Zack Thomas (assuming he is okay and playing) and that may be Jerry's and Wade's thinking here. Bobby played good a couple of years ago in place of Ellis but just couldn't seem to find his way in the starting line-up.
I also like the kid from Georgia Tech. I think he has the making of a good back for us. Special situations and 3rd downs. As for the other one I don't know a lot about him but overall I am very satisfied with the draft.
I think we are seriously ready to make a run at the SB now. If we can land a #2 WR then WOW has happened. Either way I think we have addressed several key areas and upgraded our team.
