    Stanback on the off-season

    Looking at Stanback

In Todd's internet column, which Tim referenced earlier, his look at the team's young receivers forecasts Isaiah Stanback to be one of the "most watched" guys in the team's upcoming OTAs and veteran minicamp.

I had a chance to catch up with Stanback last month, and he reported to me that he'd cut 12 pounds, getting down to 210 after struggling with injuries last year. And he thinks that, plus some of the personal work he'll get with receivers coach Ray Sherman, will make a world of differennce in 2008.

"Most of last year, I was on scout team, learning on the go," Stanback said. "My coach, his focus was mostly on the guys that were going to play. So now, in the offseason, I get to work a lot with him one-on-one and he's been teaching me a lot. I've picked up a lot of stuff. A lot of drills I wasn't allowed to do before, I'm able to do now."

One thing that did affect his progress too were foot and shoulder injuries that shelved him for weeks at a time, and put him behind as he made the move from college quarterback to pro receiver.

"It was a very frustrating year," Stanback said. "But what was supposed to happen happened, and I learned from it. I'm still doing a lot of learning. This offseason's been real important for me, but I've had fun doing it.

"I've slimmed down a little bit, like they wanted me to. And I've been learning, and I will be during these OTAs, to become a receiver. Last year, I was learning on the go."

When Jerry tabbed him in the fourth round of the 2007 draft, he was looking at an impressive 6-foot-2 athletic specimen to be developed.

Stanback knows the tag "developmental" doesn't last long. Pretty soon, he's going to have to turn potential into production, and that's what he says he's working towards.

"That's why I'm so excited about this offseason," he said. "I'm excited about all the minicamps, all that kind of stuff. I just want to do it, so I can become the kind of player I need to be to help this team."

Sounds like he's moving along nicely to me.

There's no question he has the physical tools.

It sounds like he also has a good work ethic.

The one real question mark IMO is, can he avoid injuries, or will he continue to be somewhat injury prone?

    Only time will tell.

Considering the implications of  the term "bandwagon"....I'd prefer to be one of the people that believes in his potential before he shows up on the field.

Loved his pick then, love the pick now.  I'm wondering out loud if his injuries weren't a product of playing a new position and not knowing how and/or when the hits were coming. Idle speculation on my part, that's all.

Well, you know the foot injury was from his college career.  The minor shoulder seperation he suffered was actually on a kick-off return....which seems to be to be one of the more dangerous roles for a WR!

Hopefully coach Joe can get him in a little better physical shape, to also help prevent more injuries.

It's gonna be really hard for Stanback to make the team. I'm not sure he will be able to beat out Austin or highly touted Amendola for one of those two last receiver spots on the roster.

Loosing all of the weight is great, but they need to teach him how to duck the full impact of a hit...We need a Alvin Harper, to spread the field.

    This is his to lose.

stanback will make the team. its austin or amendola who might not. austin doesnt have much more to develop and amendola is a ufa so he's not exactly a proven product. stanback can be great if things work out right, while those two dont have as much potential

cannot wait to see all that desire and hard work come out on the practice field. He has a strong desire to be the best he can be and it shows through his off season workouts.

    Re: Stanback on the off-season

Sadly, I have this feeling like we're all just going to sit around for two more season "waiting" for this guy to become something. Then, we he just never surfaces into the top 4 of the depth chart, we'll all look back and wonder why we ever thought he was supposed to be good in the first place.

Still waiting to see any sports team I'm a fan of win a championship. Still waiting. STILL WAITING.
