Weapon_X:
He was the 8th pick in his draft, a 5 time Pro Bowler and a highly paid starter, I expect a lot more out of him than we get.
He's not the only #8 overall pick on this team that has undercheived for years. I didn't see the witch hunt for Ellis' job back in 06.
And look at Carp. Picked only 8 spots after Roy was. And he's never even seen the field. At least Roy has shown up for 6 straight years and won a few games along the way.
I'm not defending Williams, because his game has dropped off the last two years. But i'm not going to give up on him.
Aikman's gonna throw, deep slant. Caught, 35. HARPER'S BREAK'N AWAAAYYY! HARPER'S GOT MIDFIELD! HARPER'S GOT THE 40, HARPER'S GOT THE 30, HARPER'S GOT THE 20, HARPER'S GOT THE 10.......

Who led the Dallas Cowboys in solo tackles last season? Who made his 5th Pro bowl in 6 seasons? Who's broken more bones than any other player in the NFL?
You know, I have been one of the BIGGEST ROY WILLIAMS supports around but eventually you are what you are... All those things above are true but what has Roy done lately? He made the pro bowl cause the starter and back up for the pro bowl weren't available (you know why!!!). Led the team in Solo tackles yes, were did he make those tackles??? No where near the L.O.S. were he is supposed to be this great players and were this defense wants him making plays filling the open gap... Whose bones has the man broke lately that weren't HORSE COLLAR TACKLES??? Theres a reason why teams went out of their way to get ROY in man to man coverage... They know he can't cover my two year old daughter!
This is what bothers me... Roy himself MADE THE PROCLIMATION that once BP was gone and this new system he WOULD BE BACK TO HIS OLD WAYS and be a factor again... HE FAILED THIS PAST season and finally it has to be ROY that takes responsiblity!!!
This is the difference... ROMO screwed up in Seattle in the PLAYOFFS and came right out and gave the "It's My Fault speech!" Roy gets burned and it's the MEDIA!!! Chris Rock would love this guy....
How many big plays did he give up last season? Would people be bringing up Roy if he was making Keith Davis type money?
He didnt give up many cause he was taken out on 3rd downs, and when he had to cover Shockey in NY - Shockey had him for lunch. Stop it already - the guy can't cover - is the whole world wrong, even he himself admits it. And no- ppl wouldn't care if he made Keith Davis money cause then we could just cut him.
Is the whole world wrong? Apparently most NFL fans, coaches and his fellow NFL players are wrong for voting him into the Pro Bowl, yet again. I think they must be wrong?

Yeah OK - you keep telling yourself that - and if he is such a great player like you say - he must be if he has been selected to the Pro Bowl 5 times, then whats up with that interview. He didn't sound like a 5 time Pro Bowler to me.

Re: Official Roy Williams Thread
Darren Woodson made RW a pro-bowler early in his career. The Pro Bowl is mostly based on making it a couple of times and then players get voted in on "reputation". RW sucks at covering, and now he can't even tackle. I cannot remember the last time he actually wrapped somebody up while taking them down. It's either the little "shoulder bump" routine or he is so woefully out of position that he is horizontal. In addition, he now has no heart, has blamed the scheme, criticized the fans, and says that Jesus says he shouldn't cover WRs and TEs. What a chump and punk he has become....and no, I don't care that he has a "support the baby-momma foundation" going for him. I thought it was en vogue to be baby-mommas in certain communities these days. At least, that's what the numbers say. Forget Roy, put him on the bench / special teams. Cut him immediately following the 08 season.

Re: Official Roy Williams Thread
A few of the postings reflect my opinion about Roy and what I have saying from start. He needs to lose some weight and he does not need to be a killer when hitting people, just make the tackles he should make. I think he over-reacts at times and takes the fakes leaving himself in a catch-up position and tackling from behind and we all know what happens there. Now that we may have two capable DB,s that can cover, it will free the safety,s to play their game. I alway thought the safety,s need to play off or somewhat deep and come up to react to a play not play man in coverage. Roy would play a lot better if he played as a rover or FS and keep it all in front of him. Hamlin can play SS, I think thats what he played at Arkansas.
On the other hand if our safety has to support the line to stop the run, than we have a major problem in the front 3 or 4 and in the middle. Zach Thomas I think is a good player in the middle.

I think if Zach stays healthy, that's a big IF, I think it will help the entire D quite a bit. Akin wasn't creating enough havoc to justify keeping him around. The combination of Thomas and Carpenter will be a big improvement to the overall D, including Roy.

Re: Official Roy Williams Thread
Presto, that is the point.. He is not making Keith Davis type money!!! HE IS MAKING TOP DOLLAR at his position and his play had been a tad better then average overall and down right horrible in coverage.
Another thing what do you call a big play? If it's a 3rd down and they opposing offense goes at Roy and gets the 1st then YES THAT WAS A HUGE PLAY!!! That's why he got benched on 3rd downs! That is why teams started matching him on 1st down and exploiting him their... No matter what WE say the proof is in the pudding, WE ALL SAW TEAMS go after ROY and REEVES last season CONSISTANTLY!
This defense has issues when it has to OVERCOMPENSATE for SS!!! That should never happen... Overcompensate for a not so dominate front 7 or a weak Cornerback but never A SS!!!!
I still like the guy and I STILL WEAR HIS JERSEY #31 (OLD JERSEY NOW) but at some point the excuses need to stop for this guy...

well said. I'm with you on the fact that Roy needs to improve his coverage game, but the thing I don't get is why fans weren't on Spears, Ayodele or Reeves when Roy had 30 more tackles than Reeves, and almost as many as Akin and Spears had comined as a tandem. I think we'll see a vastly improved Roy with a better Nickel Back, better ILB, and Spears getting some help at LE.

Re: Official Roy Williams Thread
With our improved secondary, there is no reason he should ever be playing a pure defensive back position unless he is blitzing or covering a blind, paraplegic tight end.
Still waiting to see any sports team I'm a fan of win a championship. Still waiting. STILL WAITING.

Presto, I think the sentence above says it all... When it takes better players at other positions to help you improve your game... That is pretty much saying your don't got it... The best players at their positions don't need other players to make them better. Now I understand what your saying but better players help the ENTIRE DEFENSE...
Now I personnally don't believe Roy is done at all. He has to find a way to get some confidence back, lose some weight, and really allow Coach Campos to help him... It's time for ROY to stand up and say I'm going to be ROY WILLIAMS and KNOCK YOU THE F*CK out or I am Roy Williams and I am affraid to be on the field cause I don't know what to do and I might get burnt...
For us fans like it or not, if ROY don't show it this season he is gone next season and I for one would really hate to see him go.

Re: Official Roy Williams Thread
As far as his stats being about average as some keep saying, his stats were almost indentical to Bob Sanders last year! I posted them a few times in last season's "RW threads" so I'm not going to go through that again. Look them up at nfl.com if you don't believe me.
As for him getting benched on 3rd downs last season....that is a misnomer that got repeated so many times a lot of people believe it is fact when it is simply not true. Wade said as much, and the number of plays he had last season was similar to the number of plays he had the previous couple (adjusting for his one missed game). He WAS generally out (or playing as a nickel LB) on 3rd and LONG, but he was in on more 3rds downs than the was out of (and actually prevented NUMEROUS 1st downs with solo tackles last season)
There is no question that he is overpaid with regards to his performance...but who among us wouldn't take as much as our boss would give us? His repeated horse collars after the "Roy Williams rule" was passed really pissed me off big time, but other than that his play was easily among that of the top SS in the league, but the expectations seem to be much higher for Roy than for most other DBs in the league. Probably due to his high draft status, fat paycheck, and of course his statistically amazing first season as a pro (playing beside Woodson).
If you just look at the stats, he actually had his third best statistical year last season.....could he play better? Almost assuredly! Should he play better? IF we can keep our CBs healthy and he is not expected to play both run support AND babysit a green #3 (at best) CB who's trying to fill in for an injured T-New he should look a lot better this season.
I've said before that as soon as he pulled the "finding god made me a wuss" card in his recent interview he pretty much lost my support.....but the facts still do not really support the general perception (ie. RW sucks) with regards to his play last season.
I will never understand how one of the statistically best SOLO tacklers in the NFL has gotten the rep that he now "can't" tackle!
