    NFC east: strongest division in the NFL

    At least according to ESPN.

    West takes a beating in power rankings

    May 12, 2008 8:41 AM

    Posted by ESPN.com's Mike Sando

    Our 2008 power rankings have made their debut without much regard for West Coast teams.

    NFC West teams averaged a league-worst 20.3 overall ranking in voting by eight staffers (the AFC West was close behind at about 20.2). Meanwhile, teams from the NFC East averaged a 9.2 overall ranking, best in the league. THe AFC South (11.0) wasn't far behind.

    The 49ers (27th) and Rams (28th) made the NFC West the only division with two teams ranked in the bottom six of the league. And this was despite the No. 19 ranking I gave the Rams -- a ranking that qualifies as a charitable contribution when held against the votes of my colleagues. No other voter listed the Rams higher higher than 26th on his ballot (another glass of that Rams Kool-Aid, please, and thanks for asking).

    My thinking on the Rams goes like this:

    • They have a Pro Bowl-caliber quarterback, which separates them from just about every other team ranked among the bottom 10;
    • We can trace their 3-13 record from last season directly to a long list of injuries along the offensive line;
    • It's unlikely an offensive line would suffer that many injuries two seasons in a row;
    • The Rams' defense was respectable for most of last season, and the improvement should continue as long as depth at linebacker holds up.
    Of course, all bets are off if Orlando Pace succumbs to another injury. Pace missed 15 starts last season and eight in 2006, so perhaps the odds are against him.

    Power rankings

    How is it that all the rest of the NFC is at the bottom..... I think the AFC is about to take a huge fall.... AFC East sucks they only have the Patriots and the Patriots almost always have an easy schedule. AFC west is an easy division too they only have the Chargers.... Denver isnt consistent and the Raidersand Kansas City suck. AFC North is going to have a tough schedule to a point that a team might actually go 8-8 as the division leader.... Now lets talk about how much better the NFC seems to be... Oh and might I add the top 10 picks were pretty much swarmed with AFC teams.... Greenbay just needs a QB so we dont know how good they will be yet the rest of the team seems real solid same with the Vikings, and Chicago and Detroit their just not consistant but the NFC North is just as good as the AFC North... Now in the NFC South the only team that truly sucks is the Atlanta Falcons, the Saints will probably step it up this upcoming season and take the top spot Tampa Bay is a consistent team and Carolina needs an O-line and their cool I think Matt Moore will actually be their future at QB... NFC West is a division that has to much talent Arizona's got a future Elite QB in Leinart (yes I said ELITE) they got Boldin and Fitz they can step it up, Rams had a bad year they got Steven Jackson and Holt and Bulgeer is a good QB they just had injury problems last year, Seattle is just consistant and the 49ers are back to sucking like they did before Montana.

    For the past few years?  My last count is 11 Super Bowl trophys, the most of any division in both conferences!!!  The East has dominated for 40 years!!!!

    It has been the strongest division for as long as I have been a football fan period.

    What does the NFC East have? 10 Lombardi Trophy's. Enough said.

    Make no mistake about it, the NFC East will be a street brawl to the very end.
