How can the Cowboys make Roy Williams more effective on defense?

Cowboys Pro Bowl safety Roy Williams has been a hot topic over the last few days, starting with Greg Ellis' Sirius Radio comments that his friend and teammate didn't feel comfortable in the team's 3-4 defense.

Williams has since been quoted as saying he's more optimistic about next season after meeting with his defensive coaches. How can the Cowboys make him more effective?

I think he needs to make himself more effective, and I think he has done that by losing some pounds during the offseason. His coverage skills is what is lacking in his game, the rest of it is all there. He can learn to cover a little better and should be a little more effective next season with hopefully a little more speed from the weight he lost. If his coverage skills do not improve, the Cowboys just need to sub him in passing situations if he can't put more effort into being better in pass coverage.

i think they use him doing what he does best. covering the line. maybe if he can be effective there, it will give him more confidence in himself, and hopefully that confidence would flow over into other areas of his game where he is lacking. but most importantly, the question that should be asked is....does roy still have the fire and determination to get it done?

I don't know. Maybe sit him on the bench and let Watkins have his job????

Seriously though, unless Roy makes up his mind to play football and be a LOT more fundamentally sound then there's really nothing the Cowboys can do to make him more effective. He has to get out there and play for a lot more than just the paycheck and he is the only one who can make that happen.

He was selected to play close to the line. There, he is a beast! You keep him back in coverage and he get's eaten-up. Sounds simple to me, that is why do don't see many rocket scientist working side jobs as defensive coaches.

    God don't like ugly.

    Bench him?

Seriously though... he needs to go back to the basics, and I personally feel that it would not have been a bad idea to have him at the Rookie camp. I know it's insulting, but he lacks the heart or the talent... how many times last season did we watch him do that half arm chicken wing ole tackle crap that just pushed the runner further down the field.

I don't understand what has become of Roy, but he needs to fix it, and soon... or he will go down in the books as a major bust and an overpriced hack. Jerry will also be a little disconcerted, and when contract time comes again, he will not see but league minimum from some other team.

That is not just based on his coverage skills, he didnt help much at the LOS last year either... so, him being out that one game didnt really hurt us.

well definate  keep  close to the  line  ,but  alot of it  roy  himself i think  he  just lost   confidence, he  stopped  hitting hard, not  sure whats  got in  his head but he  had recievers as well as  qbs and  back scared of  him last yearthey wanted him in the  game  he  just played  soft all the way  around.

They need to surround him with a good coverage secondary. The addition of Hamlin last year and Zack Thomas this year, keeping TNew and Henry healthy and getting the new guys (Jenkins, Scandrick and maybe Pacman if he's ever reinstated) up to speed will help Roy immensely. Then he just has to decide that God doesn't mind him making the big hits. I like the fact that they say he's lost some weight. He just looked a little chubby last year.

Re: How can the Cowboys make Roy Williams more effective on defense?

Roy just needs someone to tell him who to cover and then learn to cover them...He would be on his man last year then look at the qb and he would drift off the receiver. He just seemed lost back there. I think he can still run and I can't believe TES that are 20-30 lbs. heaver are faster than he is. He can play cover two but in this scheme he is matched on the te coming up the middle. Why could that not be hamlin or watkins with Roy playing deep on an outside wr... And Len hit the post button once...

Roy needs to learn to tackle again!

Also... I was watching the inside the NFL on ESPN this morning on the power rankings going into this season, and Chriss Carter was all too correct about the Cowboys in the #5 spot... they don't belong there. He mentioned about a team that wants a Super Bowl shouldnt have a star QB starting his own controversy and accelerating it. He is the leader, and he creates his own tabloid fodder. Also, he pointed out about getting whupped At home by the Giants... and being embarresed the year before by the Seahawks... he was right, and you guys can be homers if you like... but nothing has changed on this team, TO is on TV and Romo is soaking up Chicago and singing badly. The next person I hear mention Championship, I am going to spit... as the guy was saying on ESPN, you need to win "a" playoff game first, and they have not done that, this being their 13th season since!

Point is, we havent done squat... and Jerry better watch out.... he may have a vette with a blown engine, but he keeps selling us a lemon!

Bench him, he is THE liability of the D. He is ineffective and either too stupid or lazy to study the playbook and film to figure out where he's supposed to be. He's not a good teammate and a terrible leader. He has confessed his incompetence and tried to deflect blame to the CBs "for the big salaries they make" when he makes more than both of our CBs. He FEARS the QB throwing the ball in his direction but is too lazy to do anything about it. I am ashamed to call him a Cowboy, he is a coward and unfortunately once Jones gave him the big contract, he quit and we can't cut him or trade him unless they haven't read what he said. And his comment that he's tired of the fans because they're just there when times are good and he wants supporters is one of the most assinine statements I have ever heard an athlete make. If Adam Jones is activated, Williams will not see the field on passing downs which is the only solution for a bad player and a worse teammate. I, too, held out hope that Campo could help him, but after the comments he has made, he is done. Time to find out if Watkins or Brown can play.

Any team with a HC and QB that have never won a playoff game cannot be considered the front runner for the SB by the analysts. I still believe we will be there because of the talent on the team and a second year in the O and D. We had two new systems to learn and did a pretty good job. I think the D will take another step up and talent upgrades have been made. I believe we made upgrages in all three phases of the game. However, we have got to solve this "12 game season" problem we have and have had under four different HCs. The second season starts with the 13th game and is the impetus for the playoffs, we must be in our stride at that time. 13-4 is a great record, unless we're 1-3 in the last 4. Since 2000, we are 14-26 in Dec/Jan without a winning record in any year during those months. Until that changes, very few will pick us to return to the SB.

    Good Morning all.

I was totally surprised too at the comments Roy has made but let's understand that a lot of this is coming as second hand information.  I don't want to throw Roy under the bus just yet.  I know many of you can't stand Mick but he had a statement on his e-mail this morning that makes the most sense.  Roy needs to prepare, not prepare better, but simply prepare.  He is his own worst enemy when it comes to those wanting to blast him.  If he prepared properly, learned his playbook responsibilities he would be a better player, thus, gone are the Roy haters.  He has his millions so he appears not to care anymore about the team or football in general.  Let's hope Campo can get him motivated to do his job again.  If not, bench him and then let him go somewhere else next year.  Problem is - who would want him, ahhh the intrigue of it all....................

T with - "Championship".........................Just wanted to see what spit might look like on here.  Just being a knothead, sorry.

Tell everyone who has a shot at the position (including Roy) that the spot will go to the man that earns it in training camp and preseason.

Webber, the comments about not wanting QBs to throw his way and the corners should be helping out is not second hand, I heard the comments and almost wrecked my car. I have never heard such a cowardly statement by a professional athlete. Williams is a disgrace as a Cowboy.
