Ken at strong safety and Watkins on passing downs with Roy jamming tes at the line or hauling a-- to the qb. You have to mix it up and not leave anyone back on the nfls tes we play....

Just a question but has ESPN or the NFL Network reported on any of Roy's comments? I have been listening but have not heard.
Coach, you touched on Roy being called into the front office. Was there any discipline laid down to Roy or do we know? I just don't hear a lot where I live and I do not trust ESPN or NFL Network to spin the comments in a truthful and unbiased manner.
Someone please let me know.
Apparently it was to "clear the air" here is the story as reported in the Dallas Morning News: http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dws/spt/football/cowboys/stories/051108dnspocowlede.3a26947.html
Don't really know what happened in that meeting because Stewart amd Maxie didn't talk about it and probably won't. After the things Williams has said, I wouldn't take his word on any conversations especially that lack of communication crap. The only lack of communication is he's too lazy to study film or too stupid to understand it. If they're truly going to get him more involved and that includes the passing game, we've all been watching a different player. I am sure they want to see if they can salvage him for the money he is being paid and so far Watkins and Brown haven't stepped up, but maybe this year? I am sure of one thing. Brian Stewart addressed that comment about our corners earning the big bucks and not covering for him he made on Irvin's show. I don't care that much about the fans comment or the fear factor because those are personal comments but you just don't speak poorly of your teammates to the media and even insinuate something. It's just not done. In that game that Woody's arm was dangling by his side, in a losing effort, and he makes that tackle with his head and neck, no player was ever more justified in calling his teammates out for quitting and all he did was defend them. Like I've said a thousand times, posters we need leaders. Where are our leaders? Some make those comparisons about our 92 team, where are the leaders even close to any of those players, including QB.
Coach, How can they step up if they dont get an opportunity to play? It seems like Roy roster spot is never open for competition, and it's the main reason Keith Davis left dallas. If it was up to the coaches alone, Roy will play only on first downs against running team, I think Jerry Jones has a lot of influence on the game day roster. he wants to see his highest paid players on the field regardless if they are struggling or not.
I am left to assume they can't get on the field because Wiiliams is better. It's the same with paying Flozell all that money because his backups can't take his job. All we have to go on are the coaches decisions which are the best players to put on the field and they sure know a lot more than I do. We're going to be faced with the same decisions at RT next year.
That really is what we are left with here... as fans we must assume that the coaches will put the best players on the field to win. What else is there? I do believe that if Julius would have stayed with the Cowboys MBarber would have started--assuming MBIII comes to camp. Roy was the best at his position on the Cowboys team last season. Now, there are economic considerations, but those considerations determine who is on the team, not who plays and what opportunities they have once on the team. I know there are some players who practice better than they play in games and some play better in games than they do in practice--again that is a coaches determination and they get paid a lot of money to make those decisions and their call--- also, their jobs are on the line and it is hard for me to believe that they would not play the player that best puts them in a position to win a game. I am not naive enough to believe that it is a perfect world and that there are not factors that come to play--even Coach Phillips said that in regards to Carpenter that he sort-of got shelved because of other factors and was not given the chance--people/players get lost but the bottom line is that the players job is to be noticed and to make plays...the coaches are to get the players in position to know what to expect and to make plays. The Roy issue is back at him... make a play. The onus is on the guys behind him to make a case for themselves by getting better and competing.
Coach, you are right that we can only go by the coaches decision but sometimes I just get a feeling that certain coaches don't have guts to make hard decisions. All season long, the media, analysts, fans were crying to switch MBIII role, and use JJ for change of paste. The same coaching staff refused to do so until the last game of the season and I wonder "why" ... was Juluis Jones better then MBIII

you can't do either because you will have to take a LB out. I would rather keep Burnett and Zack Thomas on field on passing down.
I think Roy will be on the bench on 3rd and long, that's why he's crying all over the media that he's not happy with his new role.

Re: How can the Cowboys make Roy Williams more effective on defense?
Emmitt22Best:
More corner blitzes, he has 6.5 sacks and usaully gets into the backfeild when they sent him. Also, teach him how to tackle at the waist not the horse-collar. I like Roy. One of my favorite Cowboy's still!!! He was a star when the team didn't have many on the roster.
Emmitt, other than nate johns, roy was our blitzer, he just looked lost everytime blitzs, too slow to get pass the line of scrimmage. May be losing some more weight will help him.
I love my dallas Cowboys!!!

Re: How can the Cowboys make Roy Williams more effective on defense?
COMPETITION. Has RW had to compete for his starting job since he took it over. I think he needs something to light a fire inside of him. But as far as what the Cowboys can do in the game to make him more effective. Bench him during obvious passing situations.

I'm sorry but wasn't the whole point of bringing in Hamlin to help on coverage? and move Roy closer to the line? The first part worked great, Hamlin was even better than I had hoped, but what happened to using Roy almost as an extra linabacker? just imagine the Roy in Campo's old system and Demarcus now. Good luck stopping our playmakers, but as much as I love Wade that never happened. And to the guy that suggested Watkins could take over. YOUR JOKING RIGHT? I wouldn't let him start on my nephew's little league team. Much better you move Henry to free and Hamkin to strong instead of that.

I think the threat of Julius speed and past history was better than Barber starting, in the coaches' mind. They D's lined up different when Julius was in the backfield, even though he didn't deliver. And Barber has yet to prove he's a feature back. I know some will argue that point but he basically disappeared in Q4 and his blitz pickups were ineffective. He has not been good in that department since he got here and Parcells commented on it when asked about Barber starting. Two different coaching staffs decided not to start Barber, that speaks volumes to me. In all fairness to both backs, holes were few and far between and if Barber has to work that hard for his yards this season and carries a heavier load, I will be surprised if he plays all 16 games. And I will stand by a coach's decision over the media, analysts or fans opinions, including my own. And I have a lot of faith in this one. Pretty damn good team with 1st year coordinators, gotta believe they learned a lot last year about our team and will be better at their craft.

Excellent point. I thought that was the main reason we brought Hamlin in unless there was a different plan and doubts were starting to surface about Williams and his work ethic. Which is what we're all talkling about ..weight, conditioning, study, recognition..it's all about work ethic and I think he's always gotten by without it in the past and now has been found out. I think Henry's strength is on the line up against the big WRs and not back in open coverage against speed receivers. If we've got hope since we didn't draft another Safety, I believe it's Courtney Brown. I have heard good things about his ball skills and maybe he can make the jump this year. While he is an unknown, what we know about Williams isn't making anyone comfortable including the coaching staff and owner.

I don't know what to think of Roy's play over the last year, and certainly don't know what to expect from him this upcoming season. I do, however, know that your statement - "While he is an unknown, what we know about Williams isn't making anyone comfortable including the coaching staff and owner." is completely wrong! Check this out. It contradicts your statement and comes directly from the owner.

Re: How can the Cowboys make Roy Williams more effective on defense?
Thats' a good counter. But realisticaly we both know there gonna wait for Roy to get his head out of his #@$%. or release him after this season and dip in free agency for another or hit up the draft. Were really just reaching with everything else. I do think with Campo and the new number, it will all make a big difference. Hey don't disregard the fact that his production fell off when he started dating Kelly Rowland. He bacame the kinder, gentler Roy, not the mass murderer we were use to on the feild.

Re: How can the Cowboys make Roy Williams more effective on defense?
Off this topic. I hope while Barber is working out in FL he's working on his QB protection. The last game film any team has on him exposes his weakness and it will be exploited until he improves on it. We've got some bidness to take care of with Barber, Canty and Hamlin and sign our picks and we're a little tight in the cap department. And with Newman, TO and Columbo up next year, we could be facing bidding a fond farewell to some starters because every one of these players are in high dollar positions. Here's your assignment. Rank the first group in order of importance to keep and then the second. You only have 10 seconds to complete the assignment. Please time yourself as we are on the honor system.

Well, the simple fact is, none of us fans know what is going to happen this upcoming season. We can certainly state our opinions, but we don't have the insight that our coaching staff has. We do know that some real "ringers" were added to the coaching staff this offseason, and there must be a reason for it! I, as a fan, can only sit back and watch as the dust cloud builds, and hope once the dust settles that we see a much different secondary than we did last year.
