my avitar is my Fave picture of my way cool dog who we so fondly call Bruno, "the bruneman", Brewmeister, Mr Dudley Dooright, Brunehilda or last but not least BrewBaby. Bruno lost his fight against Lymphoma last week 5/5/08. Bruno fought through 2 chemo regimens and 2 remissions, all the while being the gentle giant. We aren't sure what happened other than he threw a blod clot to his spine which pretty much paralized him from the hips down, (which if you have or know of a 99lb dog, isn't pretty) I swear it was the flea/tick meds we used 2 days before, but we'll never know. sorry i digress.
with that said, tomorrow i will change my avatar to a picture of his beloved sister, she too is way cool and way depressed, and way big. Just needed to finally commiscerate with those that i have come to know, thru my puppie's picture.

Rainbow Bridge
Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

one of my faves, (i have lost 3 dogs in my "adult life", however they we're 15, 17 and sadly only 6. i guess that's what makes it so tough. He was so very healthy untill he got lymphoma.) and that is one of my faves. also the book "Dog Heaven" by Cynthis Rylanski is another good one, especially if you have children.
thanks

I feel your pain saynepsycho
I live in a rural area and used to be able to allow my dogs to run free. These days a lot of people shoot them if they see them in their yard! One of my favorite dogs got shot in the gut by a neighbor when I was 16 and I held him in my arms as he died!
I now keep all my dogs in a fence.....I've actually got an area almost half an acre fenced in now.
I've got four dogs in the main pen (they also took over my carport....luckily I have a two car garage as well) and since my parents lost their house last July in the floods I also have "babe".....an old black lab stray that I originally adopted in '99 after she had been hit by a car, and her daughter "Lady".....who's father was half Tundra wolf/half Grey wolf. She was born in 2002....they stay in a side pen that's about 1500 sq feet.
My four dogs are Putter (lady's older brother), Cheyenne (87.5% arctic wolf-12.5% Samoyed Husky), and two of their pups Stripey and Khana.
The only bad thing about growing so close to them is knowing that they will have such relatively short lives!
I had a black lab for 13 years that eventually died of cancer.....it was a horrible thing to see her slowly get worse and worse.....it was hard for me to let her go but eventually I knew that she was in too much pain, and it was selfish of me to make her stay.

So sorry SaynePsycho, I know how it feels to lose a pet you love.
QB, I know how it feels to have a dog shot and pretty much die in your arms. I like you live in a very rural area with apparently a few assholish neighbors. I had my yellow lab "Sandy" get shot 200 or 300 yds away from my house. I heard him yelp and he tried to make it home but I made it to him sooner. I have never been more pissed off and I can just think about it and get so angry still. He was a smart friendly dog who was doing nothing more than wandering and sniffing around when a backwoods drunk shot him for fun I guess. I confronted the guy as soon as the Sandy died. He was a smartass and tried to fight me until I pulled a ball bat out of my truck and then I bashed his windshield in (was very stupid, did it out of anger, almost insanity). I had to go to court over it and pay a fine but that was it. The judge was a true animal lover himself and let me off. I got a new puppy now a yellow lab female this time named Bella and I truly believe that is the only thing that will make you feel better is to start all over with a new pup. It takes a while but I know I will get just as attatched.
