Re: Which player do you hope gets a long-term deal next?
Afternoon folks:
I keep reading all the negatives on Roy and I have a new twist. What if he has actually been working hard with his pass coverage skills? What if no one knows about the special instructions he's been getting from former DB's and coaches. I just cannot think Roy is so stupid as to tell everyone he is scared to have the ball thrown his way. I mean, that's stupid man!
Maybe he is baiting the HC's and OC's around the league into passing his way? Then a pick and 7 for the Boys?? Maybe I am just dreaming but all this criticism has to make him want to work on improving his skills. I know if I were in his shoes I would be busting my a$$ to get better and prove everyone wrong. Just a thought.
On Ellis, I like his ability to play the game I just wish he would shut up all his mouthing and wanting more quan!! Just play the game!

Usually I would agree with you on the Roy thing (I fully agree on the Ellis issue), but seriously, the guy skipped last weeks OTA's to go on a family cruise? after he has had countless talks with management about his attitude? I know they are not manditory, but when your entire team shows up for them, you are there for the others!
He needs to get his act in gear and start playing for this team, not himself. I have always liked him, but, if he becomes a liability, I don't see other options than to remove him.

Afternoon Webber, I would love to think there's something to that and Phillips definitely has his back with the things he's said. There is also another element. If you are a teammate and you feel he is a weak link, how do you approach a 5 time pro bowler, both years since he signed his new contract. Fact is, pro bowls validate their contributions as individuals. He's been to more than any present Cowboy. Whether you put much stock in that or not, it matters to the players and a lot of contracts are incentivized for that. He was second in tackles with missing two games. And just maybe I've been overly critical because he doesn't blow people up anymore. A team goes 12-1 and he gets singled out in the newspaper as the weak link on the team the next day. He's turning on the fans because he doesn't feel supported. He openly admits that he fears the QB throwing his way. As long as I've been watching the game, I've never heard any DB admit that and I'm sure a lot of them feel that. Once your weakness is exposed by these OC's, you are a marked man. The fact that he admitted that is a cry to the coaching staff for help from a 5 time pro bowler and maybe the only way he knew how to deliver the message. I really don't think Roy is a smart man and can't hold that against him. It's a macho game and in this case, I believe he's a very sensitive man playing it. Bottom line is we had a 13-4 team and we're pissed at two players on a team. Lot of fans would change places with us in a minute.
The road to the Superbowl is full of potholes, speed traps and road rage.

Well it sounds good in theory, but I don't think Roy has to bait anyone !!! The opposing teams have all the game film they need from last year !! If you think J Reeves was attacked last year, then you ain't seen nothing yet. They are gonna go after Roy from day 1, and continue to do so until he stops them, or the staff makes adjustments to stop it. Roy has been exposed enough, teams don't need anymore bait !!! I know WP stated that Roy was never burned deep, but he was sure burned everywhere else !
DOMINATE IN 08 !!!!!!

I think he will play better this season...the additions of new secondary members will help out alot...and i think that Campos will work with him extensively to make him understand the D...but why we are having ideas....what if the reason Roy has been training by himself is so the other teams and teammates dont see him loosing weight and getting bigger, lighter, stronger, better, faster...just hopeing probly

Good corners can certainly make it harder to isolate the safety with a WR. I believe that once Phillips saw this secondary underpressure, and not just Williams, he told Jones we've got to have more corners. And in that lies a message. They didn't get another safety, just 3 more corners. Either they feel Watkins or Brown is ready to step up or it is not as much a safety issue as have we have been led to believe. When is the last time you saw an Owner/GM and HC come out in support of a player that has just been to consecutive pro bowls? The SS position is not usually a strong cover guy position but used as a run support position. Williams was 2nd on the team in tackles and missed two games. Could his tackling technique improve? Absolutely, too many high hits and not enough turnovers. But no one has mentioned we had a first time DC last year and we have no idea whether he is any good or not. When he was the seconday coach at San Diego, anybody see his guys play the second half of that playoff game against New England? Same damn meltdown as the last 47 seconds of the first half of our playoff game. If you're looking for suspects, I submit Brian Stewart for consideration cause I haven't see anything from him yet except corners 6-10 yards off, diminishing the pass rush. We should have demoted or canned him and hired Capers when we had the chance. To hell with Phillips loyalty to a guy, so far, that's done nothing IMO. You ask me, I want some coaches in there with some damn skins on their wall, not first time coordinators with a HC that's 0-4 in the playoffs. Anyone on this forum tell me that was a good example of coaching in our last 5 games? Let's stop singling out Crayton and Williams and put the blame where it belongs. And that includes Garrett, that playoff game was an offensive play calling joke. If these coaches haven't learned from this past year about the difference between regular season and the real season, they can all go sit on the freakin' beach in Mexico.

Coach i hear ya...after we beat the snot out of the packers everything went limp...conservative play calling on Offense and Defense i also thought that the coaches needed to keep the pressure on the other teams and our players to keep ramping it up towards the playoffs then rest on our bye week for a day or 2 extra then get our asses right back in there...i believe after the playoff loss that you and i and someone else had a lil chat on the forum about one of the corners playin so far off the wr that he wasnt even on the tv screen when it showed them line up before the snap of the play...what is that like 12 or 15 yards...come on man and that is the coaches doin it or letting him get away with it...if Garrett dont bring it this season then i say let him step up to HC on someone elses team...if he is gonna play conservative like that then let him HC somewhere like the giants or the eagirls or the deadskins...i mean he shows alot of promise but i also wonder if that playcalling at the end of the season didnt come from powers above..just throwin it out there...and WP is supposed to be running the Defense he has a good system in place but i thought his talent was putting players in position to make plays...i want more this season...

Re: Which player do you hope gets a long-term deal next?
Can't sign EVERYBODY folks. If Roy continues to stink up the place, then he'll need to get cut next year and we can move Hamlin to SS, and he can get his new deal at that position, with Watkins or Brown at FS. I'd hope it's Watkins considering how much time has been invested in him. If Roy comes back to form, then you gotta start wondering if you feel comfortable with Watkins at FS and letting Brother Hamlin kick rocks. I just cannot see virtually our enitre starting 11 averaging $5-$6 million per year, and not being the #1 D in the league. These players haven't shown they have that DOG in them to get after good offenses like they do against chumps like Miami & St Louis from a year ago.
