I asked Jason Garrett yesterday for his
opinion on the comparisons that Wade Phillips drew between Thurman
Thomas and Felix Jones. Garrett was careful.
But read between the lines on this one.
"Wade was around Thurman Thomas, so he knows a lot more about him
than I do," Garrett said. "I just know he's a very physically talented
player who also has good instincts. And instincts are hard to teach. We
can coach as long as we want, but it's hard to teach a guy vision and
feel on some of those things. Tony Romo has some of those traits.
"And those are the things that really separate players in my
opinion, and we saw that on tape and in the brief glance we've had,
we're seeing that here. So again, we're excited to have him as a part
of we're doing."
Thomas' vision and instincts were also top-notch, so I'm guessing that Garrett's seeing some of the same things Wade did.
Here's the rest of what he had to say ...
"I like a lot about him," Garrett said of Felix. "I felt like we had
a good feel for him as a player, watching tape and knowing some people
there, (ex-Arkansas DC/current Cowboys assistant) Reggie Herring being
up at Arkansas and some people who were around him everyday. And
everything that those guys said has come true. I mean, he's a quality
kid, first and foremost, he wants to be a great player and he works at
it. He studies it, he works at practice, he wants to learn', he wants to
do it as much as he can.
"He's a very instinctive football player, too. He's very talented,
but you can see he sees defenses, he knows how to get big, get small,
do all the little things good players do. And we saw that on tape and
we're seeing it out here in practice. He's a young guy, he has a long
way to go, but everything we saw before, we're seeing it now and we're
excited about it." I hope they're not just paying the guy lip service because if they're right he may be the player Julius Jones was supposed to be coming out of Notre Dame.

Re: The Official Felix Jones Thread
Felix Jones is going to be remembered as the greatest Cowboy running back ever! The genius tag is going to be ripped off Bellicheats chest and pinned on Jerra'. OK OK I might be getting carried away...but just imagine.
In the voice of Pat Summerall: "Touchdown, Dallas."

I just can't see how that could be too hard.

Re: The Official Felix Jones Thread
Yes, I thnk Felix is better than Julius. Julius would hit a hole and go down when approaching a tackler or most time he could not find a hole
Felix, I saw him one time take a hand off going off right tackle, no room over there so he cut back across the grain thru the secondary the entire width of the field and took it to the house, zig zagging thru defenders. He did that against LSU, I think and scored on that run.

Re: The Official Felix Jones Thread
I have been onboard since before the draft. Felix even knew he was coming to the Cowboys or he thought he knew as Jerry reminded him. He is a great choice as a tailback and many are veiwing his highlights, not only the kickoffs, but inside runs.
Those that made the statement he is another Bush or an outside runner has never quite watched him play, because he may go to the outside or off tackle, but he is a hell of a cutback runner. Bush is no inside runner , Felix can run inside or outside.
Turn overs mentioned in the USC game, Yup he had a bad game, but since than he has been pretty solid. Last season no fumbles and McFadden had 14.
In 3 seasons he fumbled 7 times and lost 3---thats pretty good and his dual partner had something like 22 fumbles.
I am onboard, and here is where I stay.

Re: The Official Felix Jones Thread
I would like to see Felix and Barber in the backfield together this year. Together it will be an excellent change up over prior years. They both have a lot to contribute.
Charlie Waters & Cliff Harris. Two tuff guys.

Re: The Official Felix Jones Thread
Some of the guys talking about them big holes Felix was running thru, I guess to make it seem so easy, but McFadden was running thru them same big holes also.
Some guys do not realize the Razorbacks have been known for years as a option and running team going back to era of Lou Holts and the Wishbone offenses.
The Razorbacks are also well known to have one of the best and biggest offensives lines in the NCCA, plus they all block well down field ahead of the tailbacks.
Now lets see if the Cowboys can get down field and block, I think so, I really think they will enjoy blocking for great tailbacks.

Re: The Official Felix Jones Thread
I expect Felix Jones to be our KR, with Stanback back there also, as he looked really good on those 3 returns close to the beginning of the season before he got injured. Scandrick might do some if somebody's injured or we're just playing all 2nd string. On PR it'll be Pacman or Mike Jenkins, most likely Pacman.

July 17, 2008Questions heading into training camp 2:20 PM Thu, Jul 17, 2008 | Permalink | Yahoo! Buzz Pete Aldrich E-mail News tips
Todd Archer addresses several under-the-radar questions the Cowboys will need to answer at some point. How quickly will Felix Jones progress?
Marion Barber will be the every-down back, but they don't want to burn him out with 300-plus carries this season. Jones looked fluid coming out of the backfield catching passes in off-season camps. It helps that the running game has similar terminology to what he had at Arkansas. He needs to show he can be more than just a speed threat. Julius Jones had about 12 touches per game lin 2007. The Cowboys would want Felix Jones to have about 10 to 12 this season. My guess now is they're going to let Jenkins and Jones and Stanback and the other Jones and maybe Scandrick battle it out in camp to find out who the best kick returner is going to be. Just glad we finally have a logjam at that position after it's been weak for so long.
