Before I got the Golf Channel, and only had ESPN for sports news, I didn't know there were any golfers other than Tiger Woods.
The sad thing is that ALL of the guys on the PGA Tour are AWESOME golfers! Tiger is just so much better/more consistant than everyone else that a lot of them are considered to be weaker golfers than they really are in a historical perspective.
There's also a lot of hot chick golfers these days......if only I could find one for myself!!
You really have to appreciate how good these guys actually are. Golf is in NO WAY an easy sport but a lot of these guys make it look easy. Try hitting out of 12 inch rough. Hell try hitting out of thick rough that's only 2 inches high. Some of these guys make it look easy from 165 yards out but it's a very low percentage shot and you're lucky to even hit the ball let alone hit it 165 yards.
That's what is amazing to me.
Most of the courses around here are primarily common Bermuda (other than the greens, which are Bent)...even the pros struggle from relatively short Bermuda rough. The course I play is always short on help, so they often allow the rough to get pretty deep before they get around to cutting it. When they do cut it is cut at 3.5", but it is often 6 inches deep or more this time of year (some areas they never cut, and the Johnson grass is more than 7 feet tall there right now....the Fescue and other native grasses are about 3-4 feet deep). There are many times when you cannot find your ball if you miss the fairway, and even if you do it is almost impossible to advance more than 50-70 yards at best.
Last summer I hit it into some 10-12" deep stuff and tried to just hack a sand wedge back into the fairway but only managed to advance it about 15 feet. It then took me damn near five minutes just to FIND the ball again!
I do know this, several of my friends that attended last years PGA Championship at Southern Hills played golf with me the next wednesday and they said that the rough on my course was at least twice as deep, and more lush than it was at Southern Hills!
Besides not being able to advance the ball with any control, the deep gunch can really hurt wrists, elbows, and shoulders.....and can MAJORLY slow down the pace of play (my biggest gripe with it).
I don't have much of a problem with 2-3" of rough (my keys are opening the face slightly, hitting down on the ball more steeply, and holding on very tightly with the lead hand), but once it gets over 5 inches or so it's almost impossible for mere mortals to extricate themselves with any regularity or control!
It is amazing how difficult the game can be with a really tough course set-up!
