Re: Larry Allen joins the HOF Class of 2013

Larry deserves absolutely none of the blame for any failures of the teams he was on. The analogy that keeps coming to mind is Barry Sanders and the Lions. They sucked, he was one of the top two running backs in the league and among the best ever. He did everything he could, but to little avail. Same with Allen. I do realize Barry didn't leave the Lions, I'm just making a comparison to playing ability and their respective team.

I don't blame him for chasing the money. Usually, we are the ones who are willing to pay to rip a player from another team, but this time it went the other way. I wish we could have held onto him and I would welcome him back for one day and forever.

I realize this is hypocritical, but I still hold a little hate for Ken Norton, Jr. for basically doing the same thing. He, however, left during his prime and during the team's peak. He became what he was with us and helped us to the top of the mountain, but he is a 49er in my book. Larry's a Cowboy. Double standard, perhaps. But I'm okay with it.

The Ring of Honor is great, but put his name where it belongs - on the OUTSIDE of the stadium.

A few highlights from the wikipedia page. I think he makes it first ballot.

"While his strength is phenomenal, Allen burst onto the scene with the Cowboys by using his speed in one notable instance. In late 1994, Allen made his first NFL start on Monday night against the New Orleans Saints. Early in the game, Saints cornerback Robert Massey picked off a Troy Aikman pass at the Saints 35-yard line and appeared on his way to an easy return touchdown. Allen, all 326 pounds of him, ran the 210-lb. Massey down from behind and prevented him from scoring."

"At 6'3" and 325 lb, Allen may be physically the strongest man to have ever played in the NFL with an unconfirmed and unwitnessed 900lb-plus squat and deadlift as well as a 3 person assisted bench press of 700lbs-plus."
"All right now, I'm comin' out. Any man I see out there, I'm gonna kill him. Any sumbitch takes a shot at me, I'm not only gonna kill him, but I'm gonna kill his wife. All his friends. Burn his damn house down."

So that's why he ran off to another team just because they offered him more once he was no longer the player he used to be.  So loyal to Dallas and its fans.  I don't like Allen as much as most because we pretty much sucked while he was here.

I think your thinking of Torrin Tucker or someone else, because Allen was one of the most dominating lineman in NFL history. Emmitt also left for more money, I didn't hate him for that, that's the business.

He didn't leave for money. He left to try to extend his career. Jerry let him know his time here was over.

I must have been the only one alive during this time period of Allen and E. Smith leaving.  There was so many articles on these cuts that you can still find them today.

Larry Allen was a Cap Casualty.  Jerry Jones always says it was one of the toughest decisions in his life.  He didn't want to cut Allen, the price-tag just fit right.

Parcells wanted E. Smith out of here.  He knew his best of days were behind him and wanted to start of new with a fresh running game.

No-one left for the money, they left because they were forced out due to bad management decisions in the years prior.

As long as he goes in as a Cowboy, I consider himself redeemed.

Let me ask, what do you feel about Emmitt being nominated in the HOF in a couple of years?  He did play for the Cardinals his final two years in the NFL before ultimately retiring as a Cowboy.  Yes, not so much of a dreaded enemy as the 49ers but they still used to be a divisional rival.  Will that hinder your excitement for his nomination?  I know I'm comparing Emmitt and Larry Allen, but just thought I'd ask for the sake of asking you.

I made pretty much the same comment in an earlier post.  I agree, would players such as Emmitt have any less of an impact on the history of this organization because they play a couple years somewhere else?  Absolutely not.  To the fans that feel this way, what if Jay Novechek makes it into the Ring of Honor or maybe the HOF, does the fact he played for the Cardinals make him any less of the security blanket he was to Troy Aikman or any less a Cowboy?  I think not.  Most people remember Jackie Smith as "the guy who dropped the wide open pass against the Steelers", yet it was the only year Smith had played for the Cowboys, he was in fact a long time Cardinal.  Point being, the players that carry an impact on our memory will be what we remember them to be.  Allen in my mind will forever be a Cowboy.

Personally I think billbates is a man who has great knowledge!

I cringe when I think of men from the CHOSEN TEAM of the Dallas Cowboys wearing the horrible urine-gold of the 49ers.  Leonard Davis, Kevin Williams, Aveion Cason, Bob Awalt, Jay Novacek and Emmitt Smith (along with those goofs Troy Hambrick and Reggie Swinton) may have played for the Cardinals but I can't say I have any beef with St. Louis/Phoenix/Arizona.  It's just mean to dislike Arizona after all that team seems to have gone through.  The 49ers, on the other hand, are the scum of the NFL and deserve our utmost contempt!  May any player who plays for the team from Lipstick/3Com Park forever be tainted and shunned!

Here we go again.  Say it with me, "Buddy Ryan."  Cube I will at least say, I respect your convection at this point, but it doesn't change what Allen has brought to this organization.
