Re: The only thing I don't like about the Cowboys of old.

I agree that the manner in which Tex treated the players in regard to salaries was not exactly in keeping with the reputation they were selling the public. It's a shame that the players responsible for building the empire were not treated with more respect. I normally hate this reasoning to justify behavior, but....it is fair to point out that, while there were others who made more than individual players for the Cowboys, players in general were underpaid and now are largely ignored in terms of compensation. Do you know how much it breaks my heart to see Tony Dorsett on American Gladiators (the original series) or to hear Randy White shilling for a gambling website or any other number of Cowboys who have to lower themselves to consort with cheesy companies to try to make a buck off of their glory days? It's so sad and wrong.

There have been efforts recently to improve the conditions of those who are suffering as a result of the weekly trauma to which they subjected their bodies while playing in the league. That is good and overdue. But what is right in the world when JeMarcus Russell gets $61 million and you have ex-NFLers living under bridges? Granted, that is the exception, but what is not the exception is former players who did not throw their money away on booze, drugs, cars, and whatnot, and they are tapped out due to any number of circumstances, not the least of which was that they didn't earn enough money in their playing days.

Nowadays, with the money being thrown at players who have done nothing on an NFL field to justify it, and with the push by the commissioner to restructure rookie contracts to fairly compensate veterans, now would be a good time to look at increasing pensions for those on whose shoulders the current players are standing.

I don't really include Randy and Tony in the "underpaid" category, since both held out and got good contracts in the early 1980s.

Both also got nice annuities from the 'Boys, which was one of the reasons they chose to play in the '87 strike games -- so they wouldn't forfeit their annuities.

I refuse to watch it anymore. How long has it been now? 26 years? I always leave the room or just close my eyes. It wasn't even that great of a catch. Bad memories right there.

Good point on the annuity. I didn't realize that. I still can't see either of them at a paid event or hear Randy touting that website without being very sad at how desparate they must be.

It kills me when sportscenter, or NFL network suprises me with that play.  I still throw things because of that freakin' play.

If I could have three wishes to wipe out any Cowboys memory I have, they would be: The Catch, the 44-0 beating by the Bears (remember, I live in Illinois and no matter how pathetic the Bears have been since, their fans always seem to bring up 44-0), and the Jackie Smith drop ("Bless his heart, he HAS to be the sickest man in America!")

I'm sure you guys can come up with some that equally as painful, but those are my Top 3.

By the way, I was just reminded of what was it? a Gatorade commercial, I think? that showed various famous "clutch" plays going the other way, such as The Catch being dropped, Jordan missing the last shot against the Cavs, and such? God, I loved that commercial. If only.......

    My top three?

    1. Bart Starr's QB sneak in the Ice Bowl

    2. The Cowboys' non-fumble recovery against the Colts in SB V

    3.  The "Catch", but really, it was "The Sack" on Danny White later that ultimately cost us the game.
