Guess What I Found? Passing leaders, 1973

A lot of arguments have been thrown out there lately about comparing the receiving stats of WR's from years ago and today's WR's.  Get a load of this:

    Top Passers, 1973:

    NFC   Roger Staubach,  2428 yards, 23 TD's

    AFC  Kenny Stabler,  1997 yards, 14 TD's

And some wonder why the average WR's today have more yards than the best of years ago.  Those kind of numbers today would get you benched or even worse, exiled to Atlanta.

OK, Ellis is a bit above average.

In 1973,defenses were allowed to do a lot more-including clobbering a QB after the ball had left his hand & DB's having a much more lattitude on what he could do to WR before the ball got there. Also, the running game was king.

And they also had like 12 game seasons back then. 6 pre-season games. What if we had 6 pre-season games in this day and age. It would kill you to wait those 2 extra weeks for the season to start.

CB's got away with a lot more contact than they do today.
