I believe he can prove himself and become a reliable safety this year. Not great. Not the best safety in the NFL (Bob Sanders, anone?). But reliable (even sometimes when in pass coverage!). I'm expecting a few more big hits, some TFL's, maybe a sack or two.

If he pulls it together then maybe he can take up where he left off a few years back...HE NEVER WAS A COVER MAN...HE KNOCKS PEOPLES HEADS OFF.....i just hate that everyone will remember him for the last seasons where he was exposed for his weakness instead if his first couple of seasons where everyone was talking about him being the most feared safety in the game...

The fact of the matter is, while Roy may be great at tackling, he's terrible at covering.

I'm not going to lie, my top 5 safety's:(not in order) roy williams...ed reed...bob sanders...darren sharper...ken hamlin.  I honestly think the best two are ed reed and bob sanders.  Bob Sanders won the freakin best defensive player of the year! ed reed doenst need an introduction.  I read the first page of the blogs and not 1 mentioned bob sanders.  He hits, covers, and picks.  Does anyone agree?

is he the best ?  i doubt it  ,  when you take into consideration of everything the SS has to do in a game ,  he does not excell in too many catagories ,  sould he become the best ,  the answer is still no ,  i do however believe he will get back to his old self this season with the improved Cb's on the team and the reunion with D. Campo his game should be muchly improved......  if not i honestly think this will be his last year in Dallas........

Funny how this thread has been going on for nearly two years now.  It seems like everyone loves Roy.  However, everyone is wishing he was the safety they all want him to be.  So, I guess this topic will keep hot until he's run out of town.

Probably still is one of the top 3 safeties easily due to his tackling (clean and unclean).

I LIKE HIM MY FRIEND BUT HE'S NOT IN THE TOP 3...NOT YET....

    1)ED REED

    2)BOB SANDERS

3)WILSON FORM THE CARDINALS(i think thats his name)

and unfortunately i could go to 5...after that he's right there....

I'll give you Ed Reed, but Sanders has one good year and he's the next great safety. In his four year career Sanders has missed almost have of his games due to injury, unfortunately it's been every other year so that probably means he'll be hurt yet again this season. Roy had more solo tackles than Adrian Wilson had total tackles, but Wilson was hurt last season.

How many of Wilsons' were for a loss(behind the line of scrimmage)cuz Roy had 0!!!Good point about Sanders, but he'll keep hitt'n ya,while our Roy' has slumped off even in that department..."AND" we don't want mention covering skills!!!I'm still a Roy' fan,but he's on a "VERY" short leash!!!

Roy had twice as many more tackles than Wilson last season. Not many were behind the line of scrimmage, but doesn't that mean he had more open field tackles which are harder to make?

Re: Is Roy Williams the best Safety in the NFL?

Actually RW had zero tackles for a loss last year and yea it does mean he probally had more open field tackles ,  after the guy with the ball had already gained 5 or more yard's ,  so i would rather have a guy with say 16 or so tackles for a loss then the guy who has 30 open field tackles , after a nice pick up ,  but along those lines i also admit that if the front 7 do thier job the SS should not have to be tackleing the ball carrier after a nice gain..... theres always a reason why something has happened the way it did........

Thank you...ZERO is a significant number for a "whole" year!!!WOW!!!We added what i believe to be key pieces to help Roy.Believe it or not the LB's help Roy' and having Zach leading our LB's,having them in the right spot cuz he's reading the defense like a true "PROBOWL" veteran. The CB's we added are game breakers...EVERYONE of them!!!!I mean we will also have the most dominant set of CB's,possiblely DB's....Roys' not the best...but has the perfect opportunity to aquire that title this year!!!Or at least get real close....

Re: Is Roy Williams the best Safety in the NFL?

Somebody help me.  Safety is the last line of defense between the runner and our goal line, right?  If this is true why wouldn't R Williams, Safety, be tackling after a short gain more times than behind the line of scrimmage?  Unless it becomes so obvious that he is blitzing on each and every play I would expect that most of his tackles would be 5-10 deep after everyone else has missed or blown an assignment.  Pass coverage is another matter.  He is going to have to "step it up" this year but I think he is doing a much more that adequate job of stopping the run and playing SAFETY.

well the strong safety usually plays closer to the line, for the very reason of bringing run support. the slower developing run plays r roys to blow up, and hes supposed to get pressure when hes blitzing
