It's ok Wade, you get a 3 year grace period with Jerry Jones.
I used to like surprises, then Jerry Jones came along.

Re: Why was Jimmy Johnson Fired?
I do not think anyone but Jimmy and Jerry really know why Jimmy was fired.
I read some where a long while back that they had a large disagreement on something and Jimmy would not back down on it so instead he left. And yes I know it says he was fired. Just saying that is what I read in a story about it a while back.

Re: Why was Jimmy Johnson Fired?
Supposedly he had already made the decision to step down before he and Jerry had their falling out but I didn't really follow football back then so I'm not sure.

Re: Why was Jimmy Johnson Fired?
I remember like it was yesterday. The Cowboys had just won their 2nd championship in a row, and there's some big party that Jerry & Jimmy are at. It was apparent that everyone involved probably had a few drinks, so their inhibitions no doubt were a bit less guarded than normal. Jerry is beaming with pride over this awesome collection of talent that is the Dallas Cowboys, and says they're SO GOOD they didn't even need Jimmy any more, or at least they could hire a coach off the street and he could do equally as well. Barry Switzer was an old buddy of Jerry's, so of course his name was mentioned. Jimmy got word of this, and was angered dramatically. Rumors had it that he quit on the spot. In any case, they managed a minor reconciliation, and both sat down together at the press conference to announce Jimmy's resignation just days later. Today, Jimmy says that he was going to quit all along that offseason, but that is debatable, at least imho. He and Jerry have obviously reconciled now, and it's all in the past, but the whole fiasco was a sight to behold at the time it happened.
Anyway, Jerry proved he was right by hiring Switzer and the Cowboys still managed to win another Super Bowl. Only injuries kept them from winning one the first year that Barry took over. And at the same time, Jimmy proved his value too, because Dallas went through a solid DECADE where the well went dry in evaluating new talent to bring in. Bottom line, they both had egos the size of Texas, and Texas wasn't big enough for both of them. Jerry has learned a lot about the NFL since then, and Jimmy has learned he doesn't want to coach again (Jimmy's whole mantra was making sure you had the best players, and with today's salary cap, Jimmy would be mired in futility himself most likely if he were coaching).

It wasn't just injuries that kept us out of the Super Bowl in Switzer's
rookie year as Cowboys head coach. It was also off-season acquisitions
from the 49ers that enabled them to beat us in that NFC Championship
Game, including the acquisition of Ken Norton, Jr. (which,
unfortunately for us, came at OUR EXPENSE!) Good thing we got back at
them by grabbing Prime Time the next season!

Re: Why was Jimmy Johnson Fired?
TN Cowboy Blue:I read a book several years ago called "The Boys: The Feud that rocked America's Team". It was written by Skip Bayless of all people. But it gives great insight to the falling out that these two had. Basically two huge egos clashed, Jerry got drunk and was heard saying that anybody could coach that team b/c there was so much talent. Jimmy got wind of it and went ballistic. Anyway, it is a good book. Look for it on Amazon, even if Bayless did write it. It has some good inside information. LOL! That is not the name of the book. Where did you get that name? The name of the book is called HELL-BENT: THE CRAZY TRUTH ABOUT THE "WIN OR ELSE" DALLAS COWBOYS (How Troy and Barry, Jerry and Deion, and Emmitt and Michael Won it all in Spite of Themselves)

YES - The Cowboys won a Superbowl with Switzer, BUT it was with JIMMY's team. Look at how quickly the Cowboys slid with Switzer afterwards. Daryl Johnson (The Moose) has quoted someone as claiming the 95 Cowboys were the best team ever, because they won a Superbowl in spite of their head coach.
Also, we didn't make it to the Superbowl in Switzer's first year because we gave the 49ers a 21 point headstart in the first quarter of the NFC Championship game (Not because of injuries) A case could be made that poor preperation leading up to the game played a significant role in their AWFUL first quarter. Although the we outscored the 49ers for the rest of the game, the 21 point headstart was just too much to overcome.
I'm not complaining that we won a Superbowl with Switzer at the helm, but looking back now, if Jimmy could've stuck it out for 2 more years we might've won 4 in a row.
SPANKS :)

Re: Why was Jimmy Johnson Fired?
That all sounds kinda funny now after the fact. Alcohol huh? Funny how at the center of a lot of stuff like this is alcohol. I was young when all that went down but I remember stuff like recorded telephone conversations where you could here Jerry and Jimmy in the background brawling. I think it was just a skit, I'm sure the media had a field day with all that.
