Anyone else going to watch the UEFA Euro 2008 tournament?

For those of you who don't know much about soccer, this is basically like the World Cup except not quite as high profile and its exclusively for European countries. It's held every 4 years, evenly spaced between World Cups. It may not be quite as big of a deal as the World Cup, but it sure does take Europe by the collar for a month. It starts this Saturday. Lots of the games will be on ESPN or ESPN 2. If you're not into soccer so much, you should try to watch a couple of games if you can. Two years ago, I thought I didn't like soccer, but then I was in Germany for a while when they were hosting the 2006 World Cup. So check it out. These are unquestionably the best players in the world, and every other game has some sort of long, historic backstory or rivarly, so it's pretty intense.

Yeah, I'll be watching - its too bad Soccer is not popular here in the states it really is a great sport. Also coming up is the finals of the Copa Liberidores, thats the South American Club championships. You talk about rivalries - some of these fans get carried away - I mean at times people die at some of these games where there are riots and all kinds of crazy stuff going on.

Football (American) is about the only sport that interests me.  I'll watch *some* NBA when the finals start and maybe a game or two of the Stars when they're in the playoffs, but that's about it.  I like going to Rangers games, but i don't watch them or any other baseball on tv.  I really have no interest in watching the world series or any all star game.  I might watch a few plays of the pro bowl, but that's about it.  To be honest, i'd rather watch some repeat game on NFLN than to watch the world cup soccer match.  I realize that soccer is huge, but it's just not for me.

The Italian Serie A gets pretty insane too - like stabbings and riots. The EPL is generally pretty calm, although there are many intense rivalries.

I like the hooligans.  Those guys go nuts.  I saw a movie about it one time -- Green Street Hooligans.  It was pretty good.

Yeah - those guys are crazy. Besides the big Cups the most entertaining games to watch (as far as regular season) is the EPL, those games are pretty fast pace. I find the Italian league too slow, they play a very defensive minded game. My all-time favorites to watch is the Brazil National team those guys are unreal - thats like the soccer version of the dream team.

HOW ABOUT THAT TURKEY GAME TODAY? I feel bad for Petr Cech, but wow that was quite a finish.

    Go Germany.

I had the opportunity to live in Germany for awhile, and you are right, it does grab them by the collar.  They are freakish crazy fans compared to raider nation chumps.  I'll be watching some.

You never know what's going to happen in the Euros. Look at Italy, France, and Germany, the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place teams of the 2006 World Cup - all underperforming. Then you have teams like Croatia and the Netherlands who just come out of nowhere.

did any of you see USA smash Barbados in the other day. They won like 8-0. I know this isn't Euro football, but it was nice to see.

That's the difference between the 21st ranked national team in the world and a bottom quarter ranked national team.
