Will Felix Jones be as good as Jerry Rice?

Because it sure sounds that way, the way some people on these boards are talking about his receiving skills. Why do so many posters go crazy over every compliment any player receives. First it was Stanback is athletic and big, which automatically made him a proven #1 WR. Then it was Amendola was quick, which made him Wes Welker.

Now its Felix Jones has good hands and is quick, which means he's the next Westbrook. Did anyone notice how many passes he caught in college? 39 passes, which is very average for a RB. Did he impress people in practice, sure, but then again everyone does, or else they wouldn't even be on the team.

Can we at least wait till the season starts before people talking about sending him wide on some plays, and using him as a 4th WR in others?

Why do people over react to anything? It happens in everything in everyday life.

Now I will ask you this. What do you want people to talk about this time of year?

I had to read this thread twice because I was sort of confused about how you had Felix Jones in comparison to Jerry Rice.  I understand it now, but at first I thought you made a mistake or something.  Stick out tongue

I understand people are very excited with the anticipation of what is to come, but I do agree, slow down on the anointing oil...the kid hasn't even played an NFL game yet and obviously he's being compared to Jerry Rice as this thread indicates.  I have no doubt he'll succeed where Julius Jones left off and he'll be successful to catch the ball off the flat and perhaps be a durable running back, but until we see what he can do let's not push the bar too high, because if those expectations are not met, we'll only set ourselves up for disappointment as he may not live up to the standards we expect him to live up to before he's even played a game.

What it comes down to is people are bored and cannot wait for the football season to begin.  There is nothing better to do than gleefully anticipate what is to come from this 2008 Cowboys football team than a better effort than last year's 13-3 season.  What better way than to place higher expectations on the new aquisitions we aquired than comparing them to future HOF greats like Jerry Rice or former Cowboys?

I'm not sure where this all started? Jones averaged 1 reception per game in his career at Ark.!!! I sure hope he's as versatile as everyone seems to think!

I'm all for talking about where to play who, but at least keep it realistic. Everything he's done so far points to him being average at best at receiving.

I think one of the reasons we are so high on Felix is because he is replacing someone we were really low on.

Felix Jones will break every single record held in the NFL by a mile and that's God's honest truth. /sarcasm Getting sick of all these Felix threads though, one more and he gets an official one.

I have a feeling that Felix is going to be the missing link in thje running game; not the receiving game...only thing I can go by is how he performed in colledge, and what people say about him...I don't know what the pecentage is on transferring Colledge success into the NFL, but it does happen, and if I'm right its not going to hurt the Cowboys at all...any further success in the receivig department is just an added bonus

The predraft assessements I've read say he has great hands and is a great receiver, his average numbers coming from an offense that basically had no QB.  How is he expected to catch passes if his team doesn't throw?

His abilities point toward him being a very good receiver out of the backfield and good at the screen.

OK, Ellis is a bit above average.

There are several things that factor in to all the Felix Jones hype, I agree with GrizzlyBear, about who he is replacing, and add to that just being bored this is the worst time of the year for a football fan because while the team is beginning to get prepared for the season training camp hasn't started, and we don't even get to watch preseason yet so when left to our own what else can we do but talk about our new players and prospects for the season and some of us me included tend to delude ourselves sometimes when it comes to any Cowboy player I think its called Homerizm and ther is no known cure for it until September.

I'd say it's a bit of "Putting the cart before the horse", but people are just excited and anxious and bored with the off season.

I try not to come down on em because I enjoy optimism albeit a bit overboard from some.

Like 34-32 would say, let's not put him in Canton just yet.

    I've fallen and I can't get up !!

That is called foreshadowing, which is today's lesson of the day.

Foreshadowing-  the presentation in a work of literature of hints and clues that tip the reader off as to what is to come later in the work.

I just want to see some improvement in the running game and maybe throw him a few screen passes. He won't set the world on fire for 2 or 3 years. The kid is a rookie. Does anyone really expect a pro bowl type season from him this year It is possible but highly unlikely. Let him get his feet wet in the pros  There are some but not many rookies that have a great season. He should do well and be a very good compliment to Barber but atleast give him a season before you compare him to anybody.

Sounds like we finally have a nickname for our backfield - Thunderbolt and Big Foot. I have to side with e41 on this. If memory serves, we haven't selected a RB in the 1st round since Emmett Smith, so why not get excited? Hey, we're all grown people here and we realize many a high profiled RB washes out. But the kid has a legit shot and until he does fail, I'm going to embrace him. Even the most pessimistic fan wants e41 to be right, right? My glass is half full at the moment and that's where it stays, at least through training camp.
